My 95 Subaru Impreza L has recently started tapping rather annoyingly loud. It taps when I first start up my car when it's cold and whenever I accelerate. It doesn't go away once it gets warmed up, but only does it when I hit the gas. I've heard of piston slapping but that is suppose to go away once the car is warmed up.
I have changed the oil and filter. My air filter was cleaned in July. I added STP to the oil. I use 87 gas in it, going to try some higher grade gas to see if it makes a difference.
Any suggestions?

Sell the car or buy a rebuilt motor. I'm not trying to be mean, but with 185k miles on that motor, if the problem lies in the 'bottom end', the damage has already been done. While you could have the pistons replaced, the crank machined & polished, and everything put back together - the rest of the engine will fail pretty quickly since the cylinder(s) is probably damaged and there's probably metal shavings embedded in every bearing surface.
A motor swap takes less labor and the engine will last longer.
If you really want to narrow down the source of the sound, buy a mechanic's stethoscope and go over the engine while it's running. A timing light would be helpful as well, to see if the noise occurs with RPM or half-RPM (crank or cam related). You can also short plug wires one at a time (with a test light so you don't damage your coils) to see if the noise changes or stops.

Thanks for the advice.
I decided it was time to sell my baby and get a new one. Just bought a 04 Subaru Legacy.
