IF you are impressed by calling cards with a long string of qualifications and awards after the bearer’s names, you’ll be bowled over by Volvo’s all-new S80.

The latest Swede in town is not only a sleek looker but it has also brought along with it a boot-load of new three- and four-letter acronyms.

If you’ve never heard of BLIS, IDIS or PCC, fret not. BLIS is Blind Spot Information System, a sort of radar that detects if another vehicle is in the offset rear blind spot and alerts the driver via a visual signal; IDIS, or the Intelligent Driver Information System, prevents the driver being distracted by non-essential information in pressing situations, for instance by delaying incoming phone calls or text messages.

PCC is the cool Personal Car Communicator, an advanced control centre that fits in a pocket. At the touch of a button, the car owner can instantly find out whether the car is locked or unlocked, or if the alarm has been activated, or if the alarm has been set off.

It uses the latest remote smart key technology and a highly sensitive heartbeat sensor, a world first, to detect if an intruder is present in the car. Oh, it features keyless entry and keyless drive as well.

IAQS (Interior Air Quality System) effectively reduces the amount of particles, pollen, gases and certain unpleasant odours in the air that enters the passenger compartment. All the interior fabrics and leather used in the upholstery are guaranteed free from allergenic and hazardous substances.

Any techno-wizardry you can think of, the new Volvo S80 has it.
In addition, the S80 comes with Volvo innovations such as Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept), CZIP (Clean Zone Interior Package), SIPS, WHIPS, DSTC, ABS, EBD, EBA, ACC, ABL and, oh, there are a couple of two-letter acronyms as well, such as IC and CW. To decipher what they all mean, visit a Volvo showroom or check out volvocars.com.my.

Volvo Car Malaysia will be offering two versions, one powered by the 2.5T five-cylinder engine with light pressure turbo that puts out 147kW (200hp) and the other equipped with a normally aspirated, inline six-cylinder 3.2l that generates 175kW (238hp).

The 2.5T is priced at RM268,500 and the 3.2, RM398,000 (on the road, without insurance).
