The key WILL NOT TURN!  I tried everything, turning the wheel, e-brake on/off, etc., after everyone in the building gave it a shot I finally just called my insurance company and had it towed to my house!  This happened Saturday night (Sept 8) and since then I have tried several times to jump in and turn the key to no avail!  It is killing me!

Is this commom among Jeeps?   Is this something I can fix myself?  Is it simply ignition or could it be a greater problem (transmission)?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Sounds like just an ignition cylinder. But if you can't get it to turn, you won't be able to replace it yourself.

The Dodge "rubber mallet" solution on this one was a time and money saver.  All you simply do is insert the key and tap the key with it in the ignition a couple of times until you are able to turn it.  Not a long term solution, but it should get you to a dealer where you can get it repaired/replaced.

there is a video on how to remove and easily separate the parts to match a new lock cylinder kit to your existing key and then install it..

take a look  its just under 4 minutes of youtube video...

one also can just remove the wafers from the lock... and the wafer springs.. then reassemble..  this will remove the problem of the hanging up ignition function until you can pick up a replacement lock...

you can also sometimes.. just drag your individual wafers on a nail file.. emery board...  to remove burrs from the sides...

here is the video link..  and this is not spam.. do you see how many posts i have Answered..

hope this helps.. do post if you have any additional problems..
