I am working on a 1989 Ford Ranger 2.9 liter. It is surging at idle and lacking power. I cannot find a vacuum leak. Catalytic converter is not pluged and I have replaced spark plugs, cap and rotor. It has proper fuel pressure. The engine light is on and my "red brick" (snap on scanner) is not able to communicate with it. This one is just throwing me for a loop and maybe someone will suggest something that I have not tried. Thanks a bunch.

You didn't mention replacing an oxygen sensor in your list.

My son has the same '89 and we just had this same problem with his. It would idle real high and then almost idle so low that it would just about stall..
It was the PCV valve..

I didn't get a chance to check the forum before I went to work. Thank you for replying to my post. It ended up being a ground wire to the Oxygen Sensor. All is good now. Thanks.
