I'm out hunting for used cars and I'm torn between these two, both of which cost more or less the same. This will be my first car

The Ford escort sedan  has 69,000 miles on it, automatic transmission and is in good condition.

The Hyundai Elantra is also automatic, sedan, 85,000 miles. It has a few scratches near the front door and is not as cleasn as the escort.

I'll primarily be using the car for daily commute to work; might rarely take it out for a 200 mile drive.

I would appreciate it if someone could let me know which car would be better in terms of
a) Driving comfort (and maintenance)
b) Resale value after 1 year.

Thanks.

As far as all practical concerns, like price, resale value, reliability, etc, the two are probably a toss up.  The Escort has fewer mileage, and though it's a ford, the Escort was acceptably reliable in its day.  The Hyundai is also reliable, but it has more miles....

Also, what years are these cars?  What do they cost?  Are they the only ones you're considering?

As far as driving comfort---and overall driving dynamics, there's not much in it.  Id' pick the Elantra, assuming it's a 2000+ model, because it's a bit bigger, more modern, and has a more comfortable ride with arguably more precise handling.  I also happen to abhor the ugly interior of the escort--it's a product of Ford's awful "oval" themed styling adventure, which was short-lived for a good reason.  The Hyundai's interior isn't exactly exciting, but it's sensible and built to last without squeeks and rattles.

Perhaps you'd consider other cars...and perhaps I could make some recommendations if you specified your price range and criteria.
