2002 Nissan Altima (dealership blunder)

Here is my story, the check engine light was on in my vehicle (68,000 miles at that time) which is when I took it to the dealership. They did the initial diagnosis and told me that this was due to codes P0720 and P1574 and "recommended" replacing the VEH SPD Sensor and ACSD SPD Sensor at a cost of $800. So I went with their recommendation and got the sensors replaced.
A month and a half later the check engine light came back on and this time I was told over the phone that it could be because of me not closing the gas tank cap correctly. I was asked to drive the vehicle for 5 cycles (each cycle was from home to work and back). I then started to notice an issue with the shifting of gears, the RPM would go higher than normal before the automatic gear shifter kicked in and a couple of days later my car stopped going to a higher gear while I was driving on the freeway.
So I immediately took it back to the dealership (with 71,500 miles this time) and they tell me that my radiator had been leaking fluid into the transmission and now I need to replace both the radiator and the transmission which will cost me $3,500! So after looking at all my options I had them replace the radiator first and then replace the transmission fluid to see if the existing transmission was salvageable. But they came back and said that the transmission was badly damaged and was irrecoverable. So I had no option but to get a new one.
I picked up my car from the dealership yesterday after they completed all repairs, just to notice in the invoice details that the check engine light was on for the same exact codes (P0720 and P1574)!
This has lead me to believe that the dealership did not do a complete diagnosis of the issue when I took the vehicle to them for the first time, and I had to spend the money to fix the symptom rather than the root cause. By the time the root cause was identified, it was too late and I had no option but to replace the transmission.
At this time I feel like I have been ripped off just because someone did not do their job correctly. I want to know what my options are at this stage.

Hey,

I dont know what is going on,but I have an Altima 2003 3.5 and I am having the same issue.  I did not take mine to any dealer becasue my confidence in them is close to a back yard mechanic.  I replaced my Transmission speed sensor myself and i am still having the same issue.  I just bought a break switch but have not replaced it as yet.  My problems are intermitting.  Whenever after this happens and I put my car on cruise control, the cruise does not work,  the set light keeps blinking on and off and it would not hold.

I want to think that it is some other thing that is wrong.  I am not getting the 0720 code anymore but I am still getting the P1574 code and the rpms rev up high and the speed ometer indicator does not move.

When I stop and turn off the engine and sit for a minuite and turn it back on it will be fine again until this bull crap happens again.

I am about to write nissan on this topic.

I am hoping someone from nissan reads this and respond correctly.  It is not the transmission becasue mine still shifts the way it should.  Or so I think.

There is a new forum for issues relating to recalls/bulletins or other problems on any Nissan. It has contact information as well as other victims stories.  Stop by and check it out and post up if you have had a problem!!!!

Thanks
