Well I got ahold of this VW 1998 99k miles. needed some work, put some money into it, runs okay.  It get's about 22 miles to the gallon (about 2 low, 24 is ideal). Has some power, some good get up and go.

How ever inside the car I can smell Gas fumes and it's horrible. Mainly when you start up the car and the first initial Blow out of the vents. At Idle as well, Crusing on the Freeway pretty nill smell. I think because the Engine has little Demand.

I do have a check engine light on, which I know could be an o2sensor related to emmisions, maybe a fuel inefficiency problem.

Does anyone know what this may be?? Did I hit the nail on the head? I would like to know, I was going to deal with the smell, but it truely is nasty, I can smell it in my clothes when I get out, it's that bad. Thanks.
