The carfax report is not reliable, neither the dealer..
For my car it didn't mention of an accident and a car flooding earlier, which the car company dealer's mechanic did point out.
Looks like this dealer gets cars from auctions and puts on display with an exterior polish. He tries to cover up everything he can to make the car appear not-flooded.
Secondly the cars are kept with zero oil in it, so all the leaks are not at all visible in the checks.
Think as many times you can, and do a check up and service only at a rated shop, shops offering free checkup or just 40 point checkup are useless in pointing severe problems. Do a 160 point checkup
This dealer got the timing belt fixed for me for extra $300, but didn't give me a receipt and no other service station says the belt is OK.
Never trust a dealer, even if you would have found 1..2 cars OK before from the same dealer.

Hrm, interesting. My girlfriend just bought a car from there. After 1 days the driver side window would no longer roll up. After 3 days the car will no longer crank or even turn over. I'm interested to see how the dealer handles this since the check probably hasn't even cleared yet as it was bought over the weekend.
Assuming her mom wrote a check and didn't pay cash, lol. I know 3500-4000 isn't a lot for a car but I believe there is a reasonable expectation that the car should run for more than a couple days!

I really agreer with the complains above about cary auto sale. Even i purchased as car from them in April and i am also having tough time with that car. The are smart while selling the car mentioning that "AS IT IS". But the AS IT IS means a lot. In my car when i purchased, all the tires were different and it does not belong to the car model. All the tires were extremely used and it can not be used further. But while displaying the car, the tires were new!!!. But the next day when we went to buy the car we did not notice that the tire is different and after three four days we noticed that it has been changed. Than i changed all the four tires as it is very very essential and life saving. Second thing, the car AC does not work and the carpets are coming out so early. I am also very much disappointed with the car purchase experience with cary auto sale. They should be honest and i am a student and for me $4000 to $5000 is a very difficult this to accumulate. However, i am not happy with the car purchase

My last Honda civic I purchase was from a dealer south of nashville www.MidTnAutos.com in Smyrna Tennessee they gave me a carfax and an autocheck.com report. They told me the Autocheck was better than Carfax. They also insisted I took the car to another shop of my choosing and have the Civic inspected. the cras was fine, they recommended a new set of rear brakes and the dealership paid for them to be installed. I read recently where most fraud is caused by private individuals who sell cars on the side "curbstoners" they pose as individuals and buy and sell. The problem with that is the article i read stated the customer never got his title and whn there is a problem the seller is no where to be found. "BUYER sould always BEWARE!

It is my belief that the dealers certainly owe a due responsibility to their customers who buy cars in the hope of riding them for a reasonable period of time. Dealers should not be pissed off with the customers.
Here in Japan, customer is the King. Dealers give due importance to their customers and try every thing possible to mitigate the concerns the customers might have and thus are successful. I hope our fellow dealers in other parts of the world try to understand exactly what the meaning of customer service.
Cheers to every one at the forum,
Yokohama Cars

Who are you, which car did you purchase, why did you never contact us if you had these problems?. I highly doubt there is any credibitity to you story @ all.
All vehicles sold by us come with carfax's, damage discolsure statements, odm disclosure statments, and you can take it to any mechanic you want...just our way of doing buisness. We have been in buisness for over four years without one single complaint against us by any organization. As part of the way we do buisness I would have gladly bought the car back from you if it was proven to be in a flood. Selling cars without disclosing problems like this is 110% illegal for me and my buisness. I would be more that willing to show you the damage disclosure statment that I have to sign by law when purchasing a vehicle. Many times I have bought vehicles with clean carfax records that showed major accidents @ auctions. By law I had to disclose this even though carfax and autocheck showed it clear.
Internet slander is not an appropriate way to due buisness, contacting us is.
thanks, cary auto sales

So carfax isn't a reliable source of accurate information on a car's history?

FYI
Here's what I read on the carfax website regarding the accuracy of their reports.
Also, CARFAX provides their exclusive CARFAX BuyBack Guarantee⢠which states that CARFAX will actually buy the vehicle back from you if there was a severe problem reported by a DMV (salvage, fire, flood damage, odometer problems, lemon history) that was not included in the Vehicle History Report. And with the CARFAX Buyback Guarantee, you are protected for a FULL year after your vehicle purchase!

Carfax is reliable to a point. Say you wreck you car in a single vehicle accident, you dont call the police, dont report it thru insurance, and have a friend fix the damage. Carfax will never show this because nothing was reported to show a accident. Recently we have started using autocheck instead of carfax. In most situations autocheck shows more in detail and accident data on vehicles that carfax shows as clean.

how can autocheck show more detail and accident data? if stuff isn't reported it doesn't show up on carfax but wouldn't the same be for autocheck?

I bought my car in a hurry, so I didn't notice some of the defects. The first thing I noticed was the tires were extremely worn and the front tires were different from the back tires. Obviously the tires were switched. Also a front bumper light was shattered. I asked if they could do anything about it. They said they could change the tires for 200, and they attempted to change the light, cracking the plastic mold around the wheel, which they never repaired even after several calls. Stay away from this dealer. Why do you think all the rest of the reviews on this company are negative?
