I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee(4.0 L) & while I am driving the car will start stalling & if I don't keep mashing on the gas it will shut off. i've been told so many things could be wrong & replaced most of them (spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap, air filter, & the coil). Now I'm being told it is the computer & it will be $800(w/labor) to fix it. I don't want to spend that much & that not fix it. Can anyone tell me what they replaced that fixed this problem? I have 2 small kids & it is scary that this does happens in the middle of the highway with my kids in there. PLEASE HELP!!!

have you checked if there is trouble code. cycle igniton key from off to on (engine not running) five times (leaving to on position) and watch the odometer, the reading will change to two-digit numbers and that will be the fault code(s). also a dirty IAC motor and throttle body will cause stalling.

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee and I had the problem that it would just shut off while driving, it didn't matter if it was going 10 mph or 65 mph it just shut off. I had a 100k on the car and never changed the plugs so i thought maybe it was that the neglect. I changed the plugs, igntion coil rack, air filter, and changed the oil. I also put in gas treatment in the tank and thought I did good by my Jeep. Still it shut off; I took it to the shop and it was there for 2 days and it ran so they didn't know what to do. I checked online and there are posts all over the place on this. I picked the 3 most common that I read the ECU or the computer brain, crank shaft sensor and fuel filter/pump. I called a friend of mine who said he would start with the crankshaft sensor first. So I tried it , not only was it the cheapest but if you have a second set of hands takes about 30 mins to change it yourself and save money. I changed it and have over 500 miles on the car without fault.I said to myself if this works I have to post it so somebody else would save themselves alot of grief over this. m777c777@yahoo.com if you have any questions

I have a '97 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L, 2-Wheel Drive. It shuts off while driving and lately has trouble starting. It's got over 150,000 miles. I've replaced the ECM, MAP Censor, Ignition Coil, the Cap and Rotar are new as are the plugs and wires. Some suggestions have been; crankshaft position censor and throttle. Anybody have any other suggestions?

I know this is an old post and the problem was solved. However, I had the same problem but traced it to a different cause. My battery cables had become loose such that even though the battery was OK, the juice was not available to the car and the generator was not able to charge the battery. The symptom (other than needing a jump to start) was that I had to keep the RPM's up manually with the gas pedal or the car would stall. It turned out that to keep the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee at the proper Idle speed you a complete and good battery connection. The car will run with the battery disconnected but certain systems that rely on it (like maintaining the proper Idle speed) will not operate correctly. No battery connected and you get this problem. I fixed my battery cables and the problem dissapeared.
