My '91 Nissan Sentra has 175,000 miles. I live in Arizona and when the weather is hot and the car's been running for a while, the transmission seems to stay in 2nd gear ( I think it's 2nd) when shifting normally from a stop. I try to get it to shift properly by starting out very slowly until I can feel it shifting up and sometimes it will succeed in shifting up to 3rd and then it has no problem getting to OD.
The problem seems to manifest itself more quickly if the air conditioner has been running. Sometimes I can prevent the problem if I turn off the AC, start slowly and take it out of gear when stopped. It's pretty frustrating to drive around in 2nd and sometimes I have to pull over to let it cool off abit. The transmission works pretty well when the weather is cooler and if it hasn't been running for a long time (hot). What could the problem be and what steps should I take to remedy. Thanks for any advice.

I don't think my transmission has a computer and the model # you mention, I think that model started in '93. Do transmissions without computers still have solonoids and valves that can cause this kind of trouble?
Thanks again or your advice

Sorry just found tour correct model trans... Nissan Sentra (1.6L) 1991-1999 4 SPD FWD RL4F03A It is not computer controlled as far as shift points go , So try a full service on it , A sticking 1-2 shift valve can cause this , Let me know how it goes .. and Is this the Engine size ?

Just a followup. I had the transmission rebuilt by Quality Transmission Service in Tempe, AZ. Of course it cost a bundle. Most of the clutches were pretty worn down with lots of burnt areas. There was a lot of metal in the pan. They rebuilt the converter as well. So far, so good. Thanks for the help.

the cause of the 2 to 3 no shift is a burned high clutch and debris from this gets caught in the control valve assembly and makes it stick only after the trans is warmed up...there is an updated oil pum housing with a larger hole to feed the clutch to prevent this from happenning..
if anyone has a cheap fix for this it would be appreciated
