I have replaced my PS pump...didn't fix the whine. I saw that the hose with the pressure fittings on both ends that comes out of the front of the pump and runs around into the back area of the fan had some fluid leaking out, so I replaced the O ring...did not stop the leak.
So, I replaced the hose entirely...stopped the leak, but did not fix the whine.
Yes...I have plenty of PS fluid in the reservoir.
The power steering is actually working, but it whines all of the time and worse when I am turning of course.
Anybody have any idea what I am missing?

I have the same problme..i replaced the pump from a small leak bought it got it put it on..then the small leak ( about a teaspoon every day) was still there so i replaced the high pressure hose..which FYI was a diffrent fitting that attached to the pump itself. with a new ps pump on and a new high pressure hose on no leak i get a weak whine and the fluid seems a bit cloudy..ti have a question about the new fitting jeep now uses..do you take the adapter attached to the pump off and thread it directly into the pump?...i have no idea there is no info on it anywhere..amazing..ill never buy anbother jeep this jeep has 60k on it garaged kept all service to the T..wife drivven not harsh driving and its been a night mare keeping it running fuel pump.tuen-ups tranny fluid changes u name it its a problme...

Try sucking some of the fluid out of the resivoir then replace it with lucus power steering fluid stabilizer. This stuff is amazing may take a 100 miles or so but you will see a difference. cj784 thanks

Hey guys I'm new to the forum. Just looking for some help with the my power steering pump. I have to replace it. I was wondering if you could either tell me how to do it (or if I should pay someone to do it) or show me where I can find out. It is a 01 Grand Cherokee V8. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ryan

autozone.com has most jeep models covered from 1952 up... online repair info..
you do have to join and log in... then select your jeep model and engine.. there will be a tiny blue link above where your car shows up.. repair info..
is it noisy???? leaking.???? make sure its not a hose or the steering box first..
that really looks like an easy one...
Siphon power steering reservoir. Remove the cooler return hose at the reservoir. Disconnect the pressure hose nut at the pump. Remove the pressure hose at the pump. Remove serpentine drive belt. Remove 3 pump mounting bolts . Remove pulley from pump if necessary.

I have a 2002 4.7 V8 Grand Cherokee it whines all the time when i turn the wheel, I think its normal, although i read a Mopar site on powersteering pumps on the WJ and it said that not using the manufacturers PS fluid will damage the system this weekend im probably gonna siphon out the old fluid and put Mopar brand PS fluid and see if it makes a difference.

growling noise and shaking the truck while you drive are two different problems...
change the power steering fluid.... you can use a 99 cent turkey baster from a 99 cent type store... suction some out, put fresh in.. run the engine, shut it off suction more out.. put more in.. run the engine and turn the wheel from lock to lock... after you have added 2 quarts... it should be clean enough... some oil change places have an fluid exchanger for power steering systems.. it has a suction tube and a refill tube... in one.. pulls out the old fluid as it puts in new.. while the engine runs and a different tech spins the wheel to work the dirty out of the power steering box...
as for the tire shake....
roll the drivers window down... set the parking brake... with the engine running and the wheels pointed straight ahead.. get out... reach through the window... see how much you can rock the steering wheel back and forth before the tires start to turn... if you get some freeplay in the steering wheel.. you can have someone rock the wheel back and forth.. while you look under the front of the truck... see if rod ends move before the part they are attached to move...
there is an adjustment on top of the steering box... wheel alignment guys are great at adjusting it.. is not for the average home mechanic... trust me on this........
while you are looking at the wheels... see if the jeep is moving side to side over the front tires when you rock the steering wheel back and forth... there is a track bar to keep the front axle centered under the frame that can have wear in the ends, or i have also had the bracket to the frame come loose on earlier models...
if your jeep is equipped with a steering damper.. it might be going bad..(a steering damper is a horizontally mounted shock on the steering linkage... it dampens the steering to prevent tire shake like you describe...
you can also take it to a wheel alignment specialist... have him show you what is worn.. if you don't like what he says... have him write an estimate on it.. take it for another estimate... some where else........

I have the exact same issue with my 02'. I had no issues before the garage told me I needed to replace the PS pump, but ever since I got it back it has been leaking and whining. I brought it back for both issues and the leak is now fixed but the whine is worse than ever. They say they replaced the PS pulley, it looks new, but the ugly whine, which is loud enough to wake the dead, still remains... What the heck is it? It can't be as simple as a difference in fluid types.

take it back... and whine as loud as your pump is...
if is whining.. something is wrong with the pump... a restriction in the line... it might have been started dry... they might have used an improper hammer to install the pulley...
something is wrong...
it could also be a really cheep rebuilt pump... quality control really does not translate well... when the boss is screaming at you in a foreign language.. to get more done... fill those boxes...

See if it does it when the ac is off. I have a 2001 grand cherokee limited that does that same thing. But when ac isn't running it's perfectly fine. I think somehow the ac is dragging on the power steering.Still analyzing.

I'm really slow to learn lessons. I've replaced the power steering pump and hoses three times so far. Each time was at the point of serious leaking from the pump. I've go the 4.7 engine and around 180k miles. Good tip on the better PS fluid, but I think something must be wrong in the design. In the 50+ years of driving different autos, I'm not remembering replacing any power steering pumps. Maybe I've got a lemon.

additional thoughts.... i am good at forward thinking.. almost prediction..
almost all oil change services have a power steering fluid exchange machine...
i don't know how much they charge.. and you might want to make that a special trip and keep an eye.. and test the fluid with a white paper towel for color .. before and after...
as power steering pumps never stop pumping.. they build up heat.. heat kills the power steering fluid oil life..
one also wants to really flush the system before taking the worn parts off... so there is NO dirt to contaminate the new Precision parts..
there are hand held infrared thermometers available for under 40 bucks.. most parts stores have a 29 buck model that will work fine for testing many different objects around the house...
there are some models that also have power steering cooler loops to keep the fluid temps in control...
this is 20 to 25 bucks and actually in stock at a lot of auto parts stores..

there are also power steering fluid filters available also..

Duralast/Power Steering Filter Price:$12.99 Part Number: 2210 Alternate Part Number: SF1 Micron Rating: 25 Magnetic: Yes By Pass Valve: Yes
most parts stores will have these or something very similar...
measuring the power steering fluid temps after a long hot drive.. is a good plan to know if to install the cooler..
