Have a firebird 350TPI/7004r engine in a '34 ford sedan. It runs & shifts well, except under load...like going up a steep hill and under acceloration. It will hammar and to me sounds like a rod knock in the motor. Pulled the engine pan & the lower end is clean and tight--76k miles on engine. A local guru who overhauls motors for a living suggested that it may in fact NOT even be a motor knock but the flexplate in the tranny. he suggested that the engine tranny combo i bought that came from a wrecked car could very well have had flex plate damaged in the wreck. He had experienced this very problem before.
I'd like to locate the real source of the knock, not wanting to rebuild either the trans or engine only to find it was NOT the problem.
So, is there a way to check out the flex plate for damage, short of removing the engine and trans that is? If so, can the cracks(?) or damge be spotted easily by a non-pro tranny man?
Appreciate any suggetions. Fred

Fred ,You may be able to locate your noise If in the flywheel . not to hard but you will need a very bright light! first see if your torque converter has a Inspection cover Remove that . you will see the converter and flywheel assembly.. try to (with your Bright light)look up and inbetween the two towards the crankshaft area to see any small hairline cracks (yes they may be hairline) If you cannot see Unbolt your converter (3 bolts) gently push the converter towards the trans about one half of an inch this may give you the room you need . also look for cracks where the 3 bolts go through the flywheel if all this fails tap the flywheel with a small ballpeen hammer to hear a nice tone ...if it`s a Flat or otherwise noise broke sound you may have a crack that you cannot see...
