Hi. I have a 1992 Audi 80 and seem to have some kind of coolent leak. When driving, steam pours out if the passenger side footwell and mists up the windows. If I clear them off it's only a matter of seconds beofre they are misted up again. On top of that, the steam smells kind of 'fishy' so it's pretty impossible to drive around now.
A friend of mine had a similarly aged Audi 80 2 years back and part exchanged it because he was getting a similar problem. He asked a mechanic who told him that it was a heater matrix fault (means nothing to me) and would cost around £100 to fix as the dash would have to come out. However, my friend said that his heating would not work when he had this problem yet mine does so I'm not 100% convinced it's the sam,e problem.
I've just been looking at the car and ran the engine for quite a while trying to manufacture the problem but no steam came through which suggests that the car has to be moving. Looking in the engine bay, there were signs that some coolent had leaked from somewhere onto the engine block.
So I guess my question is, do you think it's just that this leaked coolent heats up on the engine block and then blows through to the cabin when the car is moving and if so, is there any way to stop it coming through temporarily if I can't find the source of the leak?
Also, if you think it IS the heater matrix, is the dash difficult to remove?
Apologies for being a bit vague.
