When I inset the key in the ignition switch and try to start my 1994 Dodge Caravan, it fails to start sometimes. When it fails, I swivel the steering wheel a few times and move the gear shift leaver from park postion to other positions and move it back to park position. After I do these manipulations, it starts. This has been going on for a few months. The frequency of failures appear to be increasing. I took it to the dealer and he told me to change the starter motor, but he won't guarantee that the problem will be solved.
Has anyone else experience a similar problem and if I would like to know how it was fixed.
Thanks.

The ignition switch on the steering column is not really a switch,(most vehicles) but a lock. At the back of the lock a rod attaches, it runs down the column to the electrical switch. When you turn the key the rod moves and actuates the switch to start the car. Some of these switches are adjustable, loosen it and move it up or down slightly until it works properly. It is designed not to start unless in park and possibly neutral. There is an adjustment here as well, but don't know it for your vehicle. Good luck.
