Your Axel`s Should have a Slight... amount of movement about 10 to 15 Thousands (that about look`s like 3 sheet`s of paper THICK) any more is ok BUT More than 5 or 6 sheet`s of paper , movement is not good , Even if it`s 10 to 15 thick (Roughly speaking ) But This willnot create the Noise that you are trying to get rid of

Hog Rider, I have a 94 Ford Explorer, I believe the Tran is an A4LD, Ford dealer tells me I need a new Tranny. There is a banging once or twice a day at all speeds like gears are hitting and sometimes when I start the car and try to drive it feels like its in 4WD low (very slow and it grinds). I'll put it in reverse for a second and it will then ride fine (Except for the banging every so often). It also takes about 6 seconds to go into reverse and bangs pretty good when it does engage, also shudders sometimes when backing out of my driveway. Ford checked out the transfer case and shafts and ruled them out also. Any idea on a price I should be looking at for a rebuilt Tranny/installed??? Thanks for any advice, Dave

Dave ... I,m sure you checked your fluid level... A4ld`s are not known for transmissions Grinding... get a second opinion .
a Rebuilt installed goes from $950 upwards to $1900 Depending where you go try to stay away from junk yard units they may be $500 installed Price shop major transmission shops and look for one that`s slow ( with work ) Theil be glad to haggle to get your busniess

I have been up for hours looking for some information. My father has a 1988 2500 Silverado Automatic Trans (I think 700R4). Car turns on fine. However, when shifting into gear...tranny does not grab any gear. No reaction to shifting. any idea of what my be causing this? My father and I assumed it may need oil. However, just changed the filter and added oil. No more leaks and oil is full..Where can I start? Is it electrical? Want to try and avoiding any rebuild or overhaul. By the way oil was clean red, no debris on pan. Please help.

Cotton, Do not cut any wires !! this problem must be fixed correctly or you will have problems like you wouldnt beleive ........First try what Transdoctor has suggested... another common problem is in the Valve body . The TCC solonoid filter could break / Dislodge from the spacer plate and Block the valve

Hog, Its Dave again, regarding possible Tranny issue from earlier post. I brought my truck to a major Tranny place yesterday and we went for a test ride. I explained the problems I was having and after the test ride the owner states the transmission sounds fine. I then told him that Ford service stated the transmission was bad and he said to leave the car overnight which I did. Early today he calls and says the transmission was bad and will be 1500.00 to replace. Now my point: When starting from park the vehicle feels like it wants to go but is being "held back" with a grinding and banging noise. The banging is a deep hard bang, not a rattle. The 4x4 Low light is dimly lit and is only noticeable at night. I'm not a mechanic but nothing I have read on any Tranny forum describes a bad tranny causing these problems. It does not have any problem shifting gears or sliping at any time. It switches into 4x4 high with no problem but I cannot switch it into 4x4 low. When I press the button for 4x4 low it does not respond. Does this sound like a tranny prob or a transfer case prob??? Sorry for the long drawn out post.

Dave THIS , Sound`s like a Transfer Case Issue, But in your First post you said The dealer said trans , Then you took it to a shop and they said trans, If someone can Garantee the noise / gring will be gone with a new`s trans you may have no other choice ( as If i could hear it I could tell you better ) But DONT have them tell you now your trans is fixed BUT !!!! Get my drift ?

Thanks for doing this, BTW, this has been a great help!
I have an '02 Kia Spectra with 4spd auto. The car shifts into 2nd fine, 3rd with a bit of feathering the accelerator and will not go into 4th at all, even red-lined on the freeway. The check engine light pulls a code of "incorrect 4th gear ratio" and the car has a burnt fluid smell. The first time this happened, adding fluid solved it (it was low), engine light and all, but not anymore...just looking for diagnostic ideas...I know there is a slow leak somewhere...but just wondering if a leak could cause something this severe?
thanks

I have a 85 S10 Blazer 4x4 that wont shift out of first. I have changed the filter and was wondering what else it could be. It started out having to warm it up before it would shift. Now it wont shift at all
