I have a 93 Suburban 4x4.   It sounds like it grinds gears when starting from a stop.  I think it is the 1-2 shift.  I don't know what else I should be looking for to find the problem.  The fluid looks good, but I could probably use a new filter.

a grind in the shifts is uncommon ( but not un heard of) they will gring while in a purticular gear ,  first  drop the pan and look for Metal shavings , If you find this   it needs internal repair , If not  check your Mount If collasped  it will transmit  and amplify normal noises through the Metal to metal contact..

"Mike.
Sounds like you have covered all your bases and know what your doing ,
I,ll try to help you through this .......
after this posting please send all info to my posting   Titled :
"I,ll try to Help all you guy`s and Gals w transmissions problems"
as to not Blog up this site !!! Thanks .........
First  aquire a  400 P.S.I  pressure gauage  this can be had at a Good Automotive store   or a Snap On Dealer Or Mac  Or  Maco Tool dealer.
I,ll send you  location for the pressure  tap in the other  posting.
But this pressure test is Important to find the problem  and  Yes it does sound as though the Boost valve is stuck !  Rev. and  low.  require about  300 p.s.i. to work and not shutter,  By taking off the  Modulator hose you have just boosted line pressure to about 200  that`s why it  work`s well  at that point ,  It does sound like a pressure problem ,,  in the V.B.  But lets be sure.....  I,ll get you more info on the other Posting  on this page .."

Hi HR,

Thanks for the reply.  Nice topic, by the way.  I too am a professional of sorts, as I spent many years rebuilding trannys for a living..... but............ that was until 1985, and 4T60E's didn't exist yet.  lol
(and you're right;  we're *definately* not - all - crooks, thank the Lord!!)

I changed careers a long time ago, but still rebuild a trans every now and then for friends and family.  We must be thinking along the same lines, because a guage is what I was searching for all day.  I wound up ordering one online for $15, and a gentleman at a local hydraulic shop made me a high pressure hose for it.  It'll be here in a few days, and I'm anxious to check the pressure and see if it rises in low and reverse like it should, and also to see how it reacts with a vacuum pump on the modulator.  I know the pump is good, but I'm also curious about its output.  Maybe the reverse-boost valve is good but the overall pressure is low.  Stuck regulator valve maybe?  I'll post the pressures as soon as this guage shows up.  Thanks again!

my wife bought a 1993 olds 88 from her grandmother. the car was not driven much and parked inside. it only has about 50,000 miles on it. we put 900 miles on it and i think the tranny is shot. when you first start it up the tranny works fine. goes into all gears and does it frimly. no slipping or slidding.after about a minute it will act like it is going into nuetral. once agian no slipping. its there, then its not. if i shut the car off and wait 25 secs( i timed it), it will work again. no matter how long it sits or if the car is hot or not, it will only work for 30 secs to a minute. any help or suggestions would be great. i think the last tranny service was by a family member( not sure if he knew what he was doing) and someone told me that the filter might have fallen, esp. if it was installed properly.  thanks.   joe.

Absolutely  check the  Transmission Fluid level first .   if full then yes we can drop the pan and see if the filter has fallen out (Not possiable) or more possiable a Cut filter seal  or Broken filter neck  This will create all your symptom`s..

thanks for the reply. yes the fluid is full.where you saying its not possiable for the filter to fall? i havent seen one of these trannys with the pan off, but i was told by a guy who i thought knew what he was talking about, that the filter in these was not bolted or screwed in but just kinda pushed in, and that there is an O ring inside where the tube pushes in. and he said if somebody had done a filter change and not taken the old O ring out, it might be double O ringed , causeing the filter to not stay in place properly. thanks again. if it stops raining here for a minute tomorrow, i will take a break from building the ark drop the pan. i thought we would be good with the tranny being that it only had 50,000 miles.  joe.

The filter is held up by the oil pan !!!! when you drop it you,ll see their is NO  clearance for the filter to fall !!! and if not fully installed  will smash the filter neck !!!

I have some questions about a drag car buildup that had been on hold for years.

Caris gutted 80 mustang and should not weigh more  than 3000#.  Engine is 393 Cleveland, I hope to make around 500 hp with redline at approx 7000 rpm. Transmission was rebuilt by local guy 20 years ago, it had shift kit put in and should have all new soft parts. After rebuild the tranny (and engine I built at that time) were ran no more than 10 hours max. Rear end is moser 9" with 4:11 detroit locker, drive shaft is new with 1350 crosses.

Transmission is C6, torque converter is tci superstreetfighter. Converter may change if this does not work well, but will try first as I have it.  I am at about 4500' elevation and car will be used for drag racing but may see a run into town now and then.

My questions are:
1. Is there any point in tring to run tranny after it sat all these years? The last time it ran was over 15 years ago. Always stored in garage with holes plugged.

2. Tranny was built with modest 351c in mind, this engine is much hotter and the use will be almost all bracket racing. Will tranny handle this new use without lots of expensive parts? If new stuff is needed, what would be advised.

3. Plan on footbraking it to start, do not want to spend my way into transbrake and other high dollar mods if I can do without. Any thoughts on footbaking vs transbrake?

Sorry this is so long, I appreciate your help.
