I have a 95 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 V6 with 137k and an automatic transmission. Today the transmission got stuck in 2nd and wouldn't upshift any further. I was about an hour from home so I just kept it slow, about 25-30 mph for a mile or so and then the trans upshifted but would not stay in overdrive at highway speeds 65-70; it kind of "bounced" back and forth from drive and overdrive. It has fluid and hadn't shown any problems till today. Any advice is greetly appreciated. Thanks.

Drive your truck about a mile and please take note of the following: Does it start out in first or second {be sure} will it evenutally upshift ? (into what gear a guess is ok) if you can within this mile .. Manually pull the shifter down through the Range`s ie... Od / D / 2 / 1 do They all work ? any Ck/ engine or Tran`s light`s on ? Does your speedometer work ok ? E-mail me when completed....

It starts out in first then shifts to second. It eventually upshifts to third afer a mile or so. With it stuck it will shift through the gears with no change except to downshifting to 1st. It was come "unstuck" while coming to a stop as well. Maybe the torque converter is sticking? The trans light is on but due to a short I believe. It came on a few days ago after turning on the ignition but turned off shortly afterwards. Now it goes on and off while driving. I checked the fluid which is redish and full. Also the check engine light has come on recently but went off when I stopped at an intersection and hasn't come back on.

You Need to get it SCANNED it just may be an Electrical Sensor ... your Transmission and Computer need to talk to each other to Preform as Desired and the sensors{ Aka... Solonoids , Vss. ext..} do this with your Trans Light on it`s telling you that you may find the problem as listed above !! Let me know the Codes

Hog Rider-
I got it scanned but it wasn't putting out any codes. The guy at the transmission shop suggested that it may be the solenoids, and gave me a quote of $385 to replace all three solennoids. What do you think?

If you have No code`s then more than likley the Solonoids are sticking or the Valve body as well it sticking ( Ie. Valve`s) $385 is a bit high. ( For a Gambel) it seem`s at this point you may have no Choice as to try something. I still have a bad feeling about you saying that the Trans light is on With No code`s ????? That dont sound right
