These problems are not new. You are really buying a cheaper VW in an Audi cloak. I have just poured money into mine, an A6. Tie rod ends, electronics (never fixed right), transmission, timing chain covers, Air bags etc.
Even my Audi mechanic said to buy a Toyota (or Lexus if it is for luxury)! Lots of over paid engineers out there. Beware!

My 2003 A4 has around 50000 mi on it.  I had to replace the battery 3 times, replace the coolant tank, coolant seal behind the engine block, numerous electrical problems, windows coming off the tracks, but the worst was the oil pump.  Even though Audi extended the factory warranty to cover this known defect they wouldn't honor my repair.  I bought the car used at 20000 mi.  The pump failed at 40000.  They wouldn't honor the warranty because they said I couldn't prove that all the factory required service work had been done prior to my buying the car.  The original owners bought the car in Texas and then moved to CA.  I contacted the first owners but they didn't save any of the paperwork.  I had to pay $1400 for the work.  Am I an idiot for buying this story from the dealer?

Hi

The gearbox on my A4 3.0l tiptronic box would clump into drive and you can rev it and it would not want to move. I disconnected my earth terminal from the battery then reconnected the earth to the battery and gearbox functions again. I reckon some water is getting in there and making a short some where. Audi won't admit to anything!!

Audiguy,

What was the fix?  Did they just replace the filter and fluid?  I heard of this before, but lost the guy here in Orlando who knew about it.  Tampa is justa hop away.  I appreciate your help.
Thanks

I am most sympathetic with your problem. I have a 2003 Audi A4 with 34,000 miles and my transmission went out without any warning. Our dealer was less than helpful except for wanting to charge us $7600 for a new one. I have called their US Headquarters in VA, no help what-so-ever. My husband spoke with s Foreign engine specialist and he said Audi's transmissions cannot be rebuilt. A new one is the only answer. So much for German Engineering. I would never buy another one!

Adding to the thread.  I'm also a 2002 A4 owner.  I bought it new off the lot in PA.  Had considered myself as loyal as they come.  All of my service work was taken to the Audi dealership whether under warranty or not.  Now I've hit 57,000 miles and the transmission is shot. I've never had more than 10,000 miles in a single year, so basically this car was getting regular maintenance check ups at 7,000 to 9,000 miles on average a year.  "Something between the first and second gear has broken and there is metal in the fluid." "Non-repairable" and "needs to be completely replaced".  I've phoned Audi USA to request assistance with the problem in consideration that transmissions don't go out this early unless they were defective from the initial installation.  I never had a problem with driving, no shudder, no shaking - always a smooth ride.  Audi response is that "even though I'm an excellent candidate for goodwill", there isn't anything they can do about it.  Based on the stories posted on this site before mine, if I pay to have this fixed it should be for the sole purpose of selling it.  I was going to own Audis for the rest of my life and I didn't get past 58,000 miles in the first one.  Never again...   The folks that have answered our calls have excellent customer service and active listening skills.  Unfortunately you can't get to the people that can make decisions.

Audi drivers.  Understand this discussion had taken place a long time ago but found very similar issues I am having with my 03 audi A4 1.8T FWD. The dealer is saying it is the TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE/UNIT that is not processing the gear shift information.  The PRND gear gauge on the dashboard flshes and does not even show which gear I am in. Recently, reverse didnt work and car is thinking it's at neutral.

Did anyone have same issue? What am I getting into if I did not replace this Control Unit ?  They say it's about $2000 fix and I dont even want to touch it if it's mechanically not a serious issue.

My problems are not dire yet... I have a 2004 A4 1.8T FWD, every time I make a fast change of gears from reverse to drive, there is a loud bang under the car.  I have taken my car to the dealer but they say is all OK.  After reading all the problems with the CVT I am worried I will face similar problems in the future.  Has anybody experienced this?

I have the same problem with my 2003 Audi A4.  The dealers (three of them) are not helpful AT ALL!!  They just want to charge for it.  I have heard nothing but problems with these Audi's, and that is all I have experienced.  Just for some of the problems.... My TCM went out, well actually just the Transmission Range Sensor (but you have to change the whole TCM)  This part is a $2000 part. My HID bulb ($250) went out and my headlight casing ($650) because of electrical problems as well!  I would really like to start a class action suit.  Anyone want to file with me?

We need to do a class action suit.  Everyone is having the same problems.  But, it is most likely the TCM and it is a $2000 part.  On all the other cars it is only about a $200 part.  To me it really sounds funny that the part is so expensive and that is the one that goes out all the time for everyone!   Hmmmm.....
