Yes this happened to my car twice ..its at the dealers right now ... because of that ... anyway i just read it has to do with using 5w 20 oil instead of using 5w 30 which is a bit heavier and will protect the motor

I have just had this happen to my rx8 2005 ..it has 234,000 kilometers on it ... i'm from Canada ... this has happen a couple of time now ... before this the car was running great except one time when i was in colorado and had to climb the mountains .. the car didnt go past 30 miles an hour .. and when i stopped for gas ..it crashed for a minute but started up again ... as long as you dont put the pedal to the metal ... by that i mean pump the gas pedal when starting it ..that only results in a flooded engine and we all know what that means ... well, if you have had your rx8 for any length of time you do .... Now as far as your petition against Mazda .. i'm on board with you .. they require i put 5W30 in RX8's in Canada as well ... and now that i know this info ..i will be putting 5W30 in from now on ... I just purchased a new RX8 cause i loved this 2005 ...its been great ... like i said except for the occassional flooding .. so are people getting together because of this .... because i will be very upset to find out if i need a new engine because of this oil info ... and i will petition Mazda ...

Well.... It happened to me. I have a 2004, with 82,000 miles on it. I pre-ordered the rx8 online in 2003 for $48,000. It has been pretty fine until now.
I just had compression problems, the CEL was flashing at random (misfire) so I replaced the cables, plugs, and wires (as pre mazda dealership) of course they wanted $600 for this so I did it myself at a fraction of the price. No change. Finally took it in and they said that coolant was leaking into the rotary chamber. They replaced the engine.
It ran find for about 4 days then I started getting the flashing CEL and the car finally broke down - zero power, while I was on a trip between north carolina and georgia. Nightmare of a time, but Mazda was gracious enough to tow it back to the dealership that replaced the engine the week before.
They said the engine was cracked.
They replaced the engine.
I'm not sure what to do, is it okay to put 10w30 in the car? I have never used synthetic and have always used 10w20, and I always keep coolant and oil in the trunk because it runs low on coolant. The coolant light has been coming on at random this last month, they assure me that the sensor is faulty. Just seems odd as it only happened after the first replacement engine started acting up.
My other question is, IS there a class action lawsuit?

Well, after being the original owner of my 2004 Mazda RX8 and loving it for the past 7 years, I too have to have my engine replaced due to the apex seals and coils failing. I have 53,000 miles on it and I was warned about the engines' needs before I bought the car from the sales person that sold me the car. So when it stalled or flooded, I knew it was my fault. These incidence's happened 3 times and all under the warranty so I had little to complain about.
I have always driven the car hard and have the speeding tickets to prove it. I have always changed and checked the oil (5w-20) rather obsessively. Though originally from NY and now Denver, I have driven the car on long trips and stay out of traffic congestion. So when my engine light came on, I took it to Mazda service where I can say that the manager is a friend and I trust him. He said the engine light was on because of a defective catalytic sensor and that I could replace it myself when I got a chance. (I've worked on cars all my life). However, two days later, the symptoms described here on this thread occurred - the nasty smelling smoke emanating from the hood and inside the car troubled me with thoughts of the worst - had the car towed back to the dealership and waited....and waited. My fears were confirmed that I needed a new engine and pleasantly surprised that it would be done for free save some other cost I am more than willing to expend.
My biggest gripe with Mazda is that both my sun visors broke and that's just ridiculous! I had wished that I could sell the car because my life is very different from when I bought it. Regardless, as long as I have a new engine and a radar detector, I hope to continue to enjoy driving my RX8.
I will be buying a 'hoopty' soon because I'm moving back to the NY metro area.
