I will give you some advice on how to keep it from killing you,I am a mechanic for kenworths, An 18 wheeler rig.  They have air brakes, and have air compressors to air up the air tanks. you HAVE got to get a GOVERNOR to regulate your air pressure or else you will have a very big frag grenade. You should try to get a belt driven air compressor, try your local big rig shops. The ones i see usually put out about 110 psi, so that should do you fine, if you hook it up right you can use the governor on the side and can safely get about 130 to 135 psi into your tank, when the air pressure hits 105-110 it will kick the compressor again,

to run a sandblaster you need a very large volume of air at about 130-150 psi depending on what your blasting. I dont think you could run the sandblaster effectively off of 3 cylinders. I have a 7hp 2cylinder compressor and i have trouble with my sandblaster. You have a good idea with the engine but it might only be able to fill tires.  

Suggestion: Do'nt Modify the Engine, Rather attach via belt, or mainshaft output, a genuine air compression cylinder (or 3) and run their feeds to the air tank.
 

why go through all the truble to do that just buy one and you prob wont have problems getting the air to go in and not fuel and whatever allt hat junk you wrote.. chances are you will have problems even if you get it to work... go ahead and buy a good brand new compressor and dont be bothered with this  

Check with your natural gas company that supplies to your home. Through the early 90's they ran 351 Ford V8 engines this way. Four cylinders were used to run on natural gas and the other four produced the air. The engine ran as a four cylinder, distributor was a four cylinder version, I'm not sure if it was from a Ford or what. There is a lot to it.  

Dont listen to them RJ. I have the same going on. I am trying to create an air compressor to run my 1200 pound blaster. So far I am trying to convert a mopar 413 into the pump with a 2.5l  4 banger for power. I didnt want to fool with the timing system and the v8 will put out a tremendous amount of air. I need at least 135 CFM at 125 psi. way more than these other guys can comprehend. I have taken the carb off and left the oil pump in for oiling. I have found some check valves that will fit in the plates that i am welding over the exhaust ports after i removed the exhaust manifolds. I will then plumb the exhaust together into a 60 gallon tank with a pop off valve that has a muffler on it (this thing will be constantly pushing air unless you clutch the drive engine to the compressor block). Keep in mind that the motor will not be totally efficient. the exhaust and intake valves will be overlapped in their opening and closing cycles, but this is why i chose a hoss of a compressor. I plan on plumbing the coolant to the v8 from the 4 banger (this thing will generate some heat). I will keep you informed.

And dont forget you that are doubtfull. Grimmer Schmidt still uses what they call a "Monoblock". Look it up. Its a conventional v8 with 4 cyl as a compressor  

So your using a modified V8 that will be belt driven by a 2.5L ? Definatly keep me informed. I have a spare 350 and soon a spare 2.8 sitting around.  

Have you done any more on this concept of using a large cid car engine for an air compressor?  I am interested in doing just that as I live off grid in a remote area of Arizona that has a good groundwater table and I am building a small well drilling outfit to tap into that. The only problem is to blow a 4" diamenter well requires a large air compressor with a lot of cfm and short of spending a lot of money to drive into Phoenix and rent one for a day or two, it would be advantagous to have my own. I have access to a lot of engines and auto parts. Keep me posted and keep thinking outside the box! Remember, the smart people with the money want us to stay inside the box and do and think as we're told, which translates into more money and control for them, as if they need it.
