Hello.

I have a 1984 Ford Bonco with a carbd 2.8L V6. I am in need of a good air compressor and ive heard of people converting a cylinder in their engine for the use of a air compressor. I was wondering what I would need to do to go about dedicating at least one cylinder for this idea.

I understand you would have to some how block off fuel to the cylinder and also some how manage to keep air to it. Im assuming the exaust manifold would also need to be modified so something could be run from the exaust port of the cylinder to collect the air.

I dont see how this is a dumb idea?? I have a 300+ dollar air compressor that keeps up with a quite useless 50 PSI. I have a sandblaster that needs 80 PSI. For christmas I got a new abrassive blaster that will handle up to 125 PSI. Industrial sized air compressors that I would needo to put out that much would cost me thousands for the compressor itself not to mention the retarded amount of eletric it would take. Back in the 60's truck engines were commonly converted over to have a cylinder used as a compressor.

I guess I assumed people in an engine forum would know about engines. Once again im feeling that assuming is useless....

I think that you're talking about shuttin off the fuel mix to the cylinder and then putting a fitting where the Plug usually goes.  Valving would give 'one-way' air flow and "away you go"

In the 60's they used either inline sixes or V8's for this not a low compression 2.8l. The 2.8l has enough problem running on all six let alone 5 cylinders. I would not recommend this at all.

If you block off the fuel you are going to block off the air intake as well. The only thing I can think of is some kind of one way PC vave in the spark plug hole for intake and using the exaust port as the air out.

John, I will not be driving this truck, it will just be stationary, just a very large air compressor. Its a spare vehichle I have sitting around... If it comes down to it though, I have a spare 350 sitting around that I could mount basically on anything but it still comes down to the same question of how to I block off the fuel intake with out blocking off the air intake.

OK HERES WHAT IM THINKING
take the engine mount it to a old big beast of a tank that you would get from scarpyard or someware
its like using a air comprassor with out the oem motor but using the engine

OR if your engin is using a carb you weld the port closed right where the gas and air mix is about to come in to the valve, and then  do the same for the port that exspells exshust but seal the exshust anyway you can with out stoping the valve from moveing
now right behind the weld you made to seal the intake port BUT right befor the intake valve drill a hole large as you can with out screwing any thing els up NOW this is the air intake.    use a one way valve system where the sparkplug would be hook that up to your tools or tank whatever

peace

if u  close off the air going into the cyc/the the cyc wont go down caz it has to suck the air from the carb in to the cyc and the piston goes down and so on and so on

If I really wanted to do some seurious modifying I could seal off the intake for that cylinder with a plate and have a sealed metal hosed go through that plate and up out of the carb so it would get air and not gas but that would be a massive pain in the but.

this whole project sounds like a pain in the butt, seems like it would a whole lot easier with a fuel injected engine.
