My Mystique began howling, seems to come from transmission. Began with cold weather, but now seems to be more frequent. When you put it in gear begins a humming noise. Tapping the accelerator can clear the humming noise but it returns. Fluids are at level and look clear. Car was purchased used from a dealership about 5 months ago. It has 85,000 miles. Wonder if they may have changed the fluid, because it looks so clear, with an inferior fluid( I had that problem with a Dodge van I owned) or is there an inherent problem with these transmissions. I know you have to remove the entire tranny to replace the tranny filter. Any suggestions?

I have the same issue with a 1999 V6 Mystique. It started at 12K miles. The car has only 20K on it now. The noise happens only in cold weather so far. Does anyone know what the problem is?
