I am very interested in the new H3 have driven it and like everything about it ride, handleing, off rode ability but have NO knowledge of the Vortec 3500 Inline 5 cylinder engine. Can anyone educate me on this particular engine especially on reliability, durability, and maintenance issues.

It is a new engine for GM. Many people in the past have tried to but out odd number of cylinder engines and they haven't worked out very well but who knows on an inline like this.

The I5 IMHO does not belong in a truck platform. If you check EPA estimates it does not offer any mpg advantages. But if you buy a Hummer most people aren't looking at mpg's.
From what I hear GM is planning to bore it out to 3.7 in 2k7 to get some more hp's from it.230hp or something like that.
If GM could have found a way to put that I6 in the H3 that would have been quite the setup!!

Is this not the same engine that is base in the TrailBlazer and Envoy?   Is so it has been a good engine.  I drove a Enovy several times and I had no idea it was a 5-banger, very smoothe engine.

I know a lady with a 2005 H3 and she loves it.  Not one problem with it and she says it gets about 20mpg.

One thing though, she said several women (whon she does not know) have given her the middle finger passing by, likely the anti-SUV crowd as the hate you if you own one.

If I did not need a truck (for business) I would have one for winter use.
