My son purchaced a 1996 Honda Accord EX with a 2.2 liter engine. Problem is when the car is started the engine revs up and down, revs up and down. I was testing the Idle Air Control Valve by placing a finger over the hole in the throttle body and the engine idle's normally. The book says the idle should do this though. Any ideas?

My wife's 1988 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si just started having a similar idle problem a few weeks ago. When started, it contantly revs up and down. The RPM goes up to 1600, then down to around 900, over and over again. This is not random, but at a very constant pattern. It does this RPM surging at idle, but when you start letting off the clutch when in gear (therefore loading the engine), the crazy rpm surging goes away. But if you again let the engine idle (without putting a load on the engine, for example in neutral), the RPM surging starts again. It is very annoying! If anyone has any suggestions, please post a reply. Thanks!

Sounds like a vac.  leak on the vehicle.

Hi, i had the same problem on my 91 accord.  I played with everyting, checked vacuum, all kinds of crap.  Then, i cleaned the egr valve and tightened the yellow nut down inside the idle air intake valve, cleaned it right up!  SO on of those two methods worked, i am pretty sure that tightening up the nut did it though!  Good Luck!

Thank you Dassault14! You made my day! I'd been wasting my time and money going to two different mechanics for the past three weeks without any luck. They changed the idle control valve as well as thermostat but literally gave up after the problem recurred. Thanks to your post (out of 50 or so posts I've browsed already) I opened up the egr valve (after looking at an illustration on the internet to see what exactly it looked like!) cleaned it up and tightened the yellow screw. Soon as I started up the car on this cold winter evening I knew the problem had been fixed as the rpm stayed a little above 1000 and gradually decreased to 700, something that hadn't happened since I bought my 91 Honda Accord a month ago.

Thanks once again!
