Obviously, we're talking THE best car for a mid-life crisis, not the best affordable car for a mid-life crisis (which would be the Mazda Miata).  Here are the top 10 reasons why men confronting their mortality need a little Maranello magic:

10.  Now that your looks are gone, it's time to show the world that you have money.
9. To regain that feeling of really being alive, you'll need to confront death.  (Anyone who drives a Ferrari will eventually confront death.)
8. You want the whole world to know you're a player.  Er, playa.
7. After twenty years, you're finally fed-up waiting for valet parking to find your car
6. You want to get arrested for something before you die
5.  You always wanted a Ferrari, but couldn't afford one.
4. You always wanted a Ferrari, can't afford one, but want your ex-wife to think you can.
3. A Ferrari is the world's best sports car, and you deserve the best
2. Your kids will respect you (but the airbag means they can't go with you)
1. You still have testicles/ovaries.

That's a very expensive mid life crisis fixer.

The soft top of the Ferrari ruins its looks when the top is up and kills the performance of the car.

Actually, the spider is just as quick as the hardtop. I watched the Top Gear episode where they compared the 2 cars and this was their result. The spyder handles slightly worser than the hardtop because of body rigidity, but in a straight line the two cars are the same.

That's interesting. I would still prefer the F430 coupe because I think having a rigid body on a sports car is a lot more important than the speed of it. (Handling > Accerleration)
