I have a couple of questions. Does anyone know what  would cause  an idle problem with a '99 5.4L ? It starts, then goes dead. It will immediately start, you just have to give it some pedal. It does not do it everytime. I am guessing an Idle Sensor. Next question, what causes the digital odometer to go black.Same vehicle.  Thanks

The idle problem could be caused by a dirty IAC motor or bad TPS sensor. As far as the odometer it could be a bad instrument cluster or have you ever left a calulator in the sun for a while. The heat makes the lens go black on the LCD. when it cools off everything is normal. It may be getting to hot in the vehicle.

Ok,  I attempting cleaning the TPS on throttle . I unhooked bat cable also. That helped but soon started again. There are not any codes showing. Thanks for the info!

I'm having the same exact problems with my 2000 F150 5.4L.  My truck will start if I give it gas and die sometimes when I let off.  I've also had the trouble with the digital odometer to go out.  I noticed when I look close the odometer is still on but it is really dim.  I wonder if the problems are related?

I have a 2000 F150 5.4 with the odometer problem but I don't have an idle problem with mine. Could be related and but I can't see how. I usually just bump the dash above the instrument panal or wait about 2-3 minutes and it comes back on.

99 Expedition with 5.4l has same idle problem, starts but immediately stalls.  If I hold the pedal down a little, it will continue to run.  No error codes on OBD.  Anyone found the cause or remedy?

I had the same problem a few time with our 93 f150.
You need to change  your Fuel idle mixture sensor.  That will fix your problem.  It will set you back about 80$ but that fixed the problem .  Thats what it does starts up and dies  but if  you hold gas to it it runs fine.

Let me know when ya put one on if it fixes it

John, I have a 2004 F150 Lightening. It has been in the shop 5 times for the same thing. It only has 7500 miles on it. It fires up, then shuts down. The dealerships, I've been to three different ones, have replaced the IAC twice, the fuel filter three times, the fuel pump twice, they have recalibrated/or reset the computer twice. We just got it back on Friday 2/4/06, Monday it's back in the shop. What in the world could it be? The dealerships obviously can't figure it out.

Tell the shop to do a pin retention check on the engine harness.

I had this happen one time on my '99 F150 5.4L and I noticed that I had the panel light "dimming" dial turned down.  At night it looked OK, but in the brightness of the day it dissappeared.  Once you turn up the dial, it should reappear.  This is different than the other problem with the odometer going completely black, which I also have.  Dealer said I have to replace the instrument cluster for that problem.

I have a 99 ford f150 4.6.L and it started this idle problem over a year ago.  I really have not received a straight answer from anyone, but I am looking to do a tune up (replace spark plugs) and replace the fuel filter.  Wish me luck....  Oh and I also have a vacuum leak which causes my AC to convert to hot air when I got over 2 on the RPM guage.  Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

The intermittent odometer problem is very common in 1999 - 2003 Ford F150, F250, F350, Explorer and Expedition (all with digital odometers.) Ford dealers will tell you that the only solution is to replace the instrument panel (at a cost of approximately $600. Don't be mislead. Do your homework before you decide which approach you will take. This problem is easily repaired and for practically no cost. You CAN fix it!

Specialty odometer repair shops will repair the odometer for around $150 to $200, but you will have to remove/install the instrument cluster and take or ship it to the repair shop. Your vehicle will be dead until the cluster is reinstalled (could be dead for weeks, depending on the workload of the repair shop.

You might consider replacing the cluster with a used cluster, but this will be a choice that you will regret since the used cluster is likely to have the same manufacturing defect as your own cluster. Besides, it will be relatively expensive to have the replacement cluster programmed with your vehicle mileage and your PATS information.

The most economical way to fix this problem is to simply repair it yourself. You can easily fix the problem with the step-by-step illustrated guidance in the Ford Intermittent Odometer Repair Manual, which was written specifically for this common problem. Information on the intermittent odometer problem and the repair manual can be found at: http://www.odometer-repair.com
