Jeep Tranny problems in Germany

I am a member of the U.S. Army and my 2000 Grand Cherokee (4.7 V8) just arrived in Germany with the check engine light on and some serious shifting problems. It traveled by boat from the US and prior to my dropping off the vehicle about two months ago, the engine light was not on and there were no major problems with the transmission. I took it to a European Jeep dealer and had the codes pulled. It came back with 0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit, 0731 Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio, 0732 Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio, 0734 Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio, and 1790 which I am unable to find. The dealer was unsure what the problem might be, so I had the fluid and filter changed to ensure it wasn't something minor and to check the fluid for metal. The fluid was clear of any metal, but the filter change had no effect on the problem. The dealer wants to change the entire transmission which will cost better than $5000 dollars and I am not so sure that is the problem. The vehicle shifts very hard into reverse, first and second gear, but then remains in second when the vehicle is in D. The OD button has no effect either. I'm not sure if anyone else may have experienced a similar problem or might be able to shed some light on this dilemma because I would really hate to have to pay a German jeep dealer $5000 dollars if it is not necessary.

If you have a code for the input shaft speed sensor I would look into that first, common problem on the 42re transmission, cheap and easy to replace. You need to go somewhere
that has a scanner that can read live data on the trans. that will help your diag. look for RPM's on the sensor while you are moving.

Also pull apart your electrical connectors and clean them. Going accross the ocean on a boat you can get some corrodded connections.
