Hey Joe,
Guess what I just replaced the engine in my 2004 RX8, it is not your fault. Seems there is a computer problem as my dealer explained that is very problematic especially in hot weather. Any way this computer problem, caused a lot of wear and tear on the engine, so much so that the dealer could not fix it so they opted to replace it at a cost of over 4000 thousand dollars, thank god for warranties. I really like the car but am having reservations about keeping it. I suggest for you to go back to the dealer and put up a fight. The dealer told me they had no choice but to replace my engine otherwise they would have to buy it back.

I feel the same as you, tell me how you did it. I just had the engine replaced in my car at 15K. I love the car but I don't want to keep it if the engine keeps going. You can email me at robertvega1@cox.net. I live in Vegas also. The dealer tells me the RX8 computer hates the hot weather. What year do you have?

maybe i missed it in an earlier post so sorry if this question has been asked already. does this engine flooding problem only happen on the 2004 models or are all RX8's prone for this?

my friend just sold back a 2004 rx8 to the mazda corporation. after 3 engines, 3 transmissions, and many other miscellaneous problems, all of which totaled over 150 days in the mazda shop, and many a rental car all over a 2 and a half year period, all in warranty. often the mazda service manager said the problems were owners fault; wrong gas, not driven hard enough, low on oil, etc. all the problems this forum brought out, this rx8 had, stalling in the middle of the night on the interstate due to low oil pressure, staling anywhere, no starts, rough idle, rough running, computer problems, transmission problems. the engine is an oil consumption hog. according to the owners manual the oil low indicator may not light even when the oil is low. mazda corporation stated in their buy back documentation that 'under the lemon law they were allowed to reduce the buy back amount by mileage on the odometer, and they did! my friend really liked that car, but it is a dangerous and unreliable automobile.

Dealer just told me Mazda has a problem with RX8 stalling and they do not have a fix for it. Told me to conatact Mazda and see what they will do. Service department said this is very common and Mazda does not have an answer for it.

Our 2004 RX8 is currently at the dealers getting a free engine replacement while we wait a couple weeks with a free loaner. After reading all the discussion about problems, we're considering asking them to just buy back the car, but are not sure how much money to ask them to buy the car back for. We have a couple reasons for wanting the buy back such as the engine replacement decreasing the value and concern over whether this will prevent future problems or not. We don't really want to keep the car for much longer anyway because of problems driving in snow and that we aren't thrilled with the basic functionality of a sports car.
Specific Questions: How much money should we ask the dealer to buy back the car for? How much have other people been succesfull getting? Has anyone gotten a buyback without a lawyer and civil suit?

I too have a Mazda RX8, and I too live in Vegas. My car is now in the shop and they are talking about possibly the computer problem. My other problem, however, has been an unholy metallic grinding/crashing/rattling problem (and no acceleration) whenever the accelerator is punched. The last time this happened, it happened twice and then the engine just died - hence the tow to the dealer now. This is the first time I have leased rather than bought a car, and I am really regreting it, as I want to dump this lemon as soon as possible. Because it has never seemed to really run smoothly, I have driven it little and have only 4,200 miles on it, even though I got it in February of 2005. Does the rattling problem with no acceleration go along with anything experienced by anyone else?

The Rotary Engine is a Really Bad Idea to begine with all it is a airplane engine put into a car..something breaks you cant fixe it you have to buy a new engine ...what you need to do is buy a New car...stay away from the rotary engine..it's not even a reall engine..thats why you can fix them...if you hade a reg car with a reg engine the lil probulmes whouldent cost you soooooo much money to fixe.

When my clutch gave out, I had it repaired and it took about a month. Then when I got that it back, the rpm kept droppin' then would stall. It was like that for a few months. Then One day I hopped in my *** *** car cause I didn't drive it for like 3 days, since my boyfriend was drivin me everywhere. Tell me why that *** wouldn't start. I haven't driven the rx8 since march. I'm thinkin about tradin' it in when its repaired for an rx7 but its so hard to find one. Or a lotus elise. I thought I was the only one with this this problem....

Did your state lemon law allow Mazda to depreciate your vehicle for normal use? New Mexico does allow and I have a re-purchase offer from Mazda with a mileage deduction from MSRP. Am thinking of suing for full cost and want to know what you ran into on this.

Well, Sounds like we are not the only ones with these same power train issues!
Our 2004 A/T RX8 has been in the shop so much it probably should have another 6000 miles on it that we have had to put on rental cars. We have just broke the 50,000 mile mark and have had the PCM reprogramed multiple times before they finally replaced it. Then it needed a higher cranking RPM starter which additionally required a higher amprage battery. After that it was coils, ignition leads and about 4 sets of spark plugs so far (not due to cold shut downs - car just randamly decides to quite running). Next it was the replacment of the transmission along with a set of motor mounts and a new throttle control unit. After all that the dealer is now ready to replace the engine with a remanufactured engine from some Mazda approved outfit in California due to failed APEX Seals.
I used to own a 1972 Mazda RX2 that lasted me close to 100,000 miles before it gave out due to bad APEX seals. After all the years Mazda has been messing with these Rotary engines and after hearing good things about the RX7, I finaly decided to gambel on another Rotary engine Mazda and bought the 2004 RX8 - big mistake. It seams like Mazda's Rotary Engine R&D went backwards over the course of the last 32 years instead of forwards. I love the car but the power train is most definatly flawed.
Has anyone had any luck using Florida's Lemon Law in a buy back deal with Mazda? I believe Florida's law allows price reductions for years and miles but in this case we have really been lead along ways down the road by the manufacturer and dealership with the promiss that the next great latest fix was going to be the magic one.
THERE SEEMS TO BE NO MAGIC FIX FOR THE RX8 POWER TRAIN ISSUES!
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had luck with having Mazda buy back their RX8 in the state of Florida or from another state. HELP!!!!!!!!

I only have 24000 miles on my car and I have always had problems but wasn't aware of the lemon law until recently. Unfortunately, my car is older than 2 years old (past lemon law). They recently replaced my engine and a week later the same problems. Now the dealer is blaming me for the problems rather than admitting it's a defective engine. I live in Texas and I am trying to get Mazda to buy back my car but no luck so far. I am seeking legal representation at this time, in case anyone leaves in the San Antonio area. I wrote Mazda Compliance Center and they offered me an extended warranty but what's the point if the car is always in the shop. A new recall is on it's way to most of the RX-8 owners in about a month. Here is a link below, explaining it in detail. Although it's a fix, I believe it's only to get your through the warranty period, then you are screwed.

Well I have all these issues with my RX8 also. It is now in for a new motor at 26000 miles. Can anyone tell me if the new motor makes a difference or I am still going to have all the same issues. Thanks
