What would be a normal price for replacing a fuel pump on my 1999 GMC Yukon? I know that the fuel tank has to be removed for this process.

Thanks.

Don't mess around with aftermarket use ONLY a GM new fuel pump . That being said You can expect to pay $250-$320 for the unit retail and and about 2-2.5 hours labor plus tax...

I have the same problem, mine quit yesterday, I guess its a reall common problem, I looked at 2 places here Aliied Auto, 2 types 1 for 181.99 the other 219.99, then at Hovis Auto a complete assembly for 296.46. How do I know I am buying a GM replacement product?

it will come in an AC delco box...    even from gm it will be in a box with AC Delco printed on it..   with both a gm part number and a delco part number..

some models have 2 possible pump assys... i have run into this.. but did not note the differences...  but i had to match them to the parts  tag on the top of the sending unit..... after i dropped the tank...  don't plan on having it come all the way down.. before you disconnect the lines and the wiring.. so you can finally get it down to the ground to properly install the pump assy into the tank....

Along the same topic!

Can you put an exterior fuel pump on the firewall to take the place of the one in the tank? And if not why?

Thanks!

you will have problems with the fuel pressure.. as most pumps are not made to pull ....

cars with external mounted high pressure pumps ... almost always have an in the tank booster pump... or an externally mounted booster pump...  close to the tank...   we area not talking about 3 and a half pounds of fuel pressure here.. we are talking over 50 pounds...

whats really wrong here... most asian designed cars... have the fuel pump under the rear seat.. with an access passage under the seat...

so you don't have to drop the tank to get at the pump...      whats really funny... 84 to 93 corvettes... known as C4... the fuel pumps on those can be changed in under half an hour..  through the top rear deck..   the C5 and C6 cars... have two tanks...  and pumps in each one...  and you have to take out both tanks together to get the fuel pumps out..

i have found on some cars... where the booster pumps were bad... the fuel pressure surged...  as the pump had to pull fuel from the tank.. then build pressure again and again..

most pickup trucks take an hour or so to drop the tank and get the pump out..  it just takes more tools..  the dealer ships have a special jack for lowering fuel tanks...   i have a pair of harbor freight transmission jacks...

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=39178

i used one... but the fuel would always go to the lower end and tip the tank...   it sure makes it easy to get the tank down.. when working on the floor...     milk crates are also a good use to prop under one end...  but nobody uses those for that..

i have also just used brute strength... with the tanks almost empty..

but you were asking about in the tank pumps... and why the system  wont work if you just install it on the firewall..       one would also have to drop the tank.. and change the pump in tank to a strainer on a tube.. as there would be too much restriction trying to pull fuel through a dead pump...
