We have a 1991 ford tempo with the 2.3 liter engine(VIN 'X') that has a rather quick loss of engine coolant. The radiator overflow reservoir will empty itself in 30 miles of driving.
I can see no signs of external leakage anywhere on the engine. There are no drips underneath the car and I can find no signs of the telltale fluorescent green color anywhere on the outside of the engine. There is a trace of white exhaust coming out of the tail pipe, even in hot weather. The car only has 70,000 original miles. I am aware that it could be a head gasket problem or a cracked block.
My question is this: Is there a way to distinguish between a cracked block and a head gasket leak, other than by replacing the gasket and are there any known issues with the tempo 2.3 liter engine regarding coolant loss. I forgot to mention that the engine has never overheated or has been run with a low coolant level, until now. Thank You.
