Good evening, I am having trouble with my F450 heavy duty service truck. The truck is a 91 F450 with the 460 and 4 speed auto, last week I was on my way down to Los Angeles from Seattle pulling a tandem axel trailer with a Land Rover on it. Total trailer weight 5800 lb, anyways I had the truck serviced at a local lube joint and watched them do that 20 point check ie: oil, trans fluid etc etc.. Around 400 miles south of Seattle the transmission quit on me, I was pulling up hill and the truck just came to a coasting stop. After an inspection I noticed that the Trans was empty and needed to fill it??? After having the truck towed to a truck stop I started to fill the 17.9 quart trans with fluid and at 10 quarts the fluid started to flow from the top of the transmission.. I am looking for any ideas on what this could be and where to start.. Sorry for the long story, please help

J.D.

Are you sure it was 10qts. low?? Might have only been 5 qts. low etc. etc..Sounds like an over fill problem.Good luck

My guess is that the clutches are gone, might have been low on fluid while towing the trailer.

hummmm, thats not good. after i got the damn thing home i tried moving it, i have reverse and thats it, REVERSE is strong... i was wondering if there might be some failed service line at the top or something else SIMPLE and reasonable to fix...

Thanks   JD

You might have the pressure checked, could be a front pump problem but either way (bad pressure or bad clutches) the trans would still have to be torn down.
