I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee. The other day I went to start it and it would start but as soon as I let go of the key it would go dead. As long as I held the key over it would run. It's not grinding the starter either. Today I replaced the key lock cylinder but it's still doing the same thing. I knew it needed an lock cylinder anyway because sometimes it could actually be started without the key. I replaced the ignition switch box (the box down on the steering column) a year or so ago. Of course I realize it could still be bad but I wanted to get some thoughts on what else it could before I replace it again. Anyone had this problem before or have a ideal what the problem could be? Your help is appreicated. God Bless Rndchandler

I would say you are right about the ignition switch, the key and tumbler only acts as a theft device and works the rod to the switch. In my opinion that would be the first thing to check/replace.
Take care
