Odyssey DVD sound problem

I'm new to this site so forgive (and redirect) me if this has been discussed already.

We have a 2003 Odyssey with the rear entertainment system (RES).  There's a component, supposedly integrated with the monitor, responsible for headphone sound.  Ours has gone bad and the result is that headphones don't work for very long - after 30 minutes or less the sound turns into a high-pitch whining.  This is true for both the wireless headphones and for headphones one plugs into headphone jacks.

The DVD sound always works when using the car's speakers.

A dealer offered to fix this for a mere $1600 (this may have been parts only - a new monitor).  There HAS to be a cheaper way to fix this.  Has anyone else dealt with this problem?  If so, how?!...

Thx!

I have heard of this problem but I don't recall exactly what the solution was. You can get it check out at any Aftermarket Audio Shop and they'll let you know if they can fix it. With aftermaket audio shops, you can negotiate prices and cut a deal. Good luck, let us know how it went.

I have exactly the same problem.  After about 30 minutes, I get the same high-pitched buzzing whine on both the wireless headphones and on the headphone plugs, but not on the speakers.  What, if anything, did you do to fix the problem?

Thanks!

Experiencing the same problem.  Have you gotten yours fixed, and if so what did they do to fix it?

Thanks.

We've had our DVD system completely replaced by dealership once already and have the same headphone problem again.  They have ordered another part, but still waiting on it.  Ours is a 2005 Odyssey.  Anyone had theirs fixed properly?  It's extremely frustrating!

I also have the same problem and I'm very interested in finding out how to fix it. Thanks.

Nearly 6 months later and we still haven't followed through on this - we've been pretty busy ...

The best suggestion I've heard, both above in this thread and elsewhere, is to go the aftermarket route.  I'll be sure to keep people posted on the outcome.  I'm a little surprised that this problem is so prevalent.  I can't imagine a design that pushes the sound to both the IR headphones AND the headphone jacks through the monitor itself...

Just checking to see if anyone has a solution to whining sound. Our '03 Pilot last about 1 hour. We turned the DVD player off, but we still heard the feedback through the speakers, at a lower level. Needless to say, on a three hour trip son # 2 was not happy at missing the rest of his video.
has anyone contacted the manufacturer?

Add me to the list. We have a 05 Odyssey with the same problem.  It is in the shop today. Anyone have a solution to this problem other than going to an aftermarket system?

I bnought a 2003 Pilot new- had the same issue the last 4 months.. Replaced headphones and nothing works.  Also had issue with rear transitor for the A/C unit- very common for the early Pilot.  I am trying to contact Honda to see if there is a recall and will keep you guys posted.

I took a trip to Florida this Spring Break. As usual the DVD audio on the headphones cut of after about 20 minutes. Coincidently I turned of the heated seats and the sound was on again on the headphones. I did the same experiment a couple more times and every time I turned of the heated seats(driver side) the sound came back on. Probably just a coincidence but worth a try.

I had the heater on the seats. The kids were watching a DVD at the back. I was listening to the radio up front. The sound on the wireless would stop working when the heater came on.

With so many of the owners reporting these audio problems, it is about time for Honda to do a recall!!!!!!

Count us in this problem also.  2003 Odyssey has progressively gotten worse so that the last trip the headphones worked for about 10 minutes.

My rear option was never working on my 2005 but I let it go until now as my kids were to young for headphones. Luckily I got it to the shop before my warranty ran out but after replacing the console - it now works but cuts out so I'm back to the dealer tomorrow to demo my issue. I just hope they can fix it as I am looking forward to not having to hear all my kids shows!
