Details - it's my sister's car, a '96 Passat diesel wagon.  It had a fuel leak at the motor.  She lives in Carlsbad, NM, they couldn't fix it there, she brought it to me in Lubbock to take to the VW dealer.  Here's what they charged:

Belt             $45.67
"Injec Pump"   $1721.14 (part no. 028-130-115-GX)
Roller           $67.30
Clip              $1.09
Core Return    -$600.00
Labor           $520.00
Diagnosis        $90.00
"PTS Handling"    $5.00
Shop Supplies    $50.00
Taxes           $101.90
Total          $2002.10

My sister feels like she has been fleeced, perhaps because she's female, perhaps because she's from out of town, perhaps because this dealer fleeces everybody.

So how reasonable or unreasonable do these charges look?

Thanks in advance.

Everyone needs to make a fair mark up on parts.  It's part of doing business.  But.  I think you got janked on that one.  The labor and other parts look fair, but you can purchase a VW OE injector pump over the counter for under $900 and it won't cost $800 to ship it to Lubbock.  Gene Messer VW has been a rip off for years, and that goes back to at least the early '90's when I first moved to Clovis.

On a lighter note, next time she needs service done, tell her to go to Foriegn Aide in Albuquerque.  It's a bit of a drive but they're an EXCELLENT independent shop that deals solely with VW's.

$811 from impex pus 600 for core, which is refunded when they get your old one. So an extra 290 from the dealership sounds about right. I am not sure this is a fuel pump. It is listed as an injection pump, it could actually be an air pump. I am also thinking it is not a fuel pump since they did a belt at the same time. I know the secondary air pumps on the VR6s are something like 750.

Hey Aqua, the pump price is way out of line. On a diesel, the fuel injection pump is the fuel pump, the belt is the timing/drive belt and should always be replaced when you are that deep into the engine or the FI pump is getting replaced. The roller is most likely the tensioner roller. In California, The Bureau Of Automotive repair doesn't allow a line item called "Shop Supplies". This is clearly a rip-Off.

I wonder if NM has any agency protecting folks against this sort of crap?
