I recently purchased a 1996 model Jeep Cherokee and I am having problems with the remote. If I leave the car locked for more than a couple of minutes, then I can't open it with the remote. I have to use the key to open the door then the remote will work to de-activate the immobiliser. The car dealer is telling me that the remote goes into a sleep mode and this is normal. Can anyone let me know if this is the case? If so, what is the point of having a remote in the first place? Thanks.

I think the dealer is selling you a line. I would either go get an aftermarket remote if this is a big issue for you that you need the remote capability - or I would take it to another dealer. Do you have an aftermarket alarm on the car as well - anything that could be interfering ?

I had a similiar problem with my 2000 model. They feed me some BS, along the lines of what you were told, and I just went to the Chrysler dealership across town and they reprogrammed my remote in less than 5 minutes. Doesn't help with the why part but it got it fixed.
