More specifics:

GM: Employee pricing varies by model, but is about 3 to 4 percent below dealer invoice. It's available on new cars and trucks through Aug. 1. Deal excludes Chevrolet Corvette, Pontiac GTO and medium-duty trucks.

Ford: Noncompany employees pay about 5 percent below invoice, plus available cash rebates. Mustang, GT, Escape Hybrid, and Lincoln Mark LT are excluded.

Chrysler: Consumers pay 4 to 5 percent below invoice, in addition to any available cash rebates. Deal excludes Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Dodge Charger, Dodge Viper, and SRT performance line.

Um, aren't those the APPEALING models?

democrats? what are you talking about - pontiacs go with red state Oprah watchers - democrats dont buy pontiacs - where are you in SoCal b/c its the home of the import. Here is what i dont understand - if sales of GM are up 41% is that just people looking to buy trucks? are you saying that it pulled slack out of the buy cycle like 0% financing did three years ago? if so then I might agree. but i think that all makers did better just from the increased traffic on the automalls and on the auto blvds of cars  - something like this floats all the boats.

you want to know who this really hurts is used car lots! why the heck would I buy a one year for $5k less than new when the new is now $2k more only - this is going to kill resale for all the makes

FRANKLY , I  AM SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT THE CAR SALES DIDNT INCREASE MORE ON A PERCENTAGE BASIS. ONE WOULD THINK THAT ALL GM PRODUCTS WILL SELL EQUALLY WELL BASED ONTHE DISCOUNT. I DIDNT SEE STATS FROM CADILLAC ABOVE BUT THE CTS AND STS WERE ALREADY ATTRACTIVELY PRICED PRE DISCOUNT SO I WOULD EXPECT THAT THE GM EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT PROGRAM WILL REALLY HELP THESE MODELS SPECIFICALLY. I AM SURPRISED TO SEE THE JUMP IN BUICK SALES . IS THAT THE LACROSSE THAT IS DRIVING THAT INCREASE?

The specific increase in Buick and truck sales might imply that this program mainly fools more gullible buyers.

The allure of an "insider" deal combined with a one-price, no-haggle experience brought consumers to dealer lots in droves in June. Yet the final purchase price for many of these cars may not have been much sweeter than in prior months.

"It's pretty much smoke and mirrors," said David Healy, analyst at Burnham Securities. "Car buyers probably could have done almost as well in May. GM is taking away with one hand what they're giving with the other. It's really a brilliant marketing move."

Consequently, carmakers running these employee price programs don't necessarily get dinged too harshly by shrinking margins.

For example, despite a stunning 41% sales explosion for GM in June amid its "You Pay What We Pay" plan, its level of incentive spending increased by only $136 to $3,865 per car, according to online car research firm Edmunds.com.

Jane Liu, analyst at Edmunds.com, agreed with most on Wall Street, calling GM's move an "undeniable success" accomplished in part by some creative incentive shuffling.

I guess Edmund's estimate cancels out that other guy's $900 per-car figure.

Another guy's testimonial:

I bought my Silverado back in May, before this little promo even started. Just for kicks, I went to the dealership last week and priced an identical truck. I paid less for my truck in May than I would have paid for it had I waited until sometime in June.

Mine stickered for $26,675 and I paid less than $19,000 OUT THE DOOR. The same truck would have cost just over $23,000 under this promotion. Can you say "Marketing Gimick"?

I have purchased  a brand new Chevy Camaro back in 1999.  It has now under 80,000 miles on it and up to this point it has been nothing but trouble with this car. I have dumped thousands of $$$ in it and received less than adequate service from less than qualifed Chevy dealership. Me and people like me having bad experiences with GM manufactured cars are the reason these cars do not sell.
Given my personal experiences with the GM products Caprice/Lumina/ Impala over the years, I will NEVER again buy GM brand vehicle regardless of the "incentive" they offer. This experience has made me reconsider overall the quality of American made products. While I am ALL for buying American, I am not for being the victim of ripoffs, bad service, and unreliable products.
Can't wait to trade in this POS Camaro for a more reliable German made or Japan made auto.
