Honestly now, who couldn’t see this car’s instant failure? It has been reported that the Phaeton may soon join the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood as the only model of the 21st century with sales so embarrassing as to justify a pullout after one model year. Who can think of a reason for the Phaeton’s existence in the first place? To “move Volkswagen upmarket”? Did someone in fahrfegnugenland forget that their company came up with a cute little brand called Audi for that mission? Did someone also forget that not even the considerable forces of Audi’s prestige and styling expertise have proven powerful enough to move its far-superior flagship, the A8, off dealer lots over the past seven years? It has been said that the sight of a Beetle brings a smile. The drive of a Passat certainly brings a grin. Maybe it’s only natural that the Phaeton induces laughter. A $98,215 Volkswagen? HAHA.
