I drive a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer (4x4, 4.3 V6, 4 door, 125k) and am having some issues.  I was driving up north for a wedding and was going through downtown indy and came to a stoplight and when i was slowing there was a slight grinding/whining in the front end.  When I stopped there was a clunk.  I started to drive again and the sound came back.  I put it in 4 wheel drive, and it went away.  When I took it out and stopped again it started again.  After that I drove it in 4x4 for awhile and on the way back the next day drove it in 2 wheel drive and nothing ever happened since.  Also now sometimes when I put the pedal to the floor when passing someone the rpms jump like it is *** and gettin, but it gains speed very slowly.  Then when you let slightly off it will shift and start to gain speed much better.  Today on my way to work when I went to pass it started to shift and reved a couple of time before it shifted.  Also I was driving down the highway about 60mph and it seemed like it wanted to down shift then it didn't.  It did that a few times on my way to work.  Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Be prepared to have it rebuilt! That is just about the mileage that we see the 4L60E's start to go. Just make sure you take it to a GOOD tranny shop and get all the updates. Cheaper is not always better.

Yo OliverKD - I live in Indy. Have a '98 Blazer LT 4x4 automatic. My tranny went in 07/03 - only 103.5K miles on it. Had Pedigo Chevrolet on the westside replace it - $3000 for a brand new one (they told me it was only $100 difference between a rebuilt one and a new GM one...and since I was pretty much stuck, I had no choice but to pay what they told me it cost and I got the new one).

In 10/03, I went back in for another $2500 worth of work: heating and electrical. Again, at Pedigo. Now I'm suffering what everyone else seems to be suffering - possessed windshield wipers that work when the sun, moon, and stars are aligned properly, no AC (electrical again), internal turn signal clicking sounds even though the turn signals aren't on, etc. Also, someone broke into my car in 05/06 by making a small slit cut directly under the the front passenger side door handle (right underneath where the black plastic meets the body of the car under the door handle). Needless to say, anyone can easily pop the right door lock and get in (and now I don't leave anything in my car).

Do yourself a favor and read up on the 98 Blazer moneypits....you might be better off just getting a new car...

Most of the 4L60E's I have seen come in around 1400.00 to 1600.00 and A rebuilt can be just as good (or bad) as a new one.
