Spark plugs in a 01 Pontiac Grand AM

How do I get to the spark plugs on a 2001 Grand Am 2.4L?

I'm having some problems getting the car to start. The battery isn't dead but when you turn the key it will just crank and crank and crank...never start. I let my brother in law borrow it; he says he ran it out of gas, got some gas in a jug and put two gallons in it. The gauge says about 1/8th of a tank. Anyway, I know a very small amount about cars but I know that in order to start one you have to have fuel and spark. If I could pull a spark plug and see if it sparks, that would tell me which one I'm missing, right?

The only problem is that I can't find the spark plugs. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I'm not familiar with these vehicles. I've changed the spark plugs on my 1983 Z-28 and my 99 Silverado before, and it's been fairly straightforward because they don't do weird things like make the engine sideways.

So, could anyone give me an idea of how to do it? Or any other advice about how to get it going? (I've already tried to reset the security system and all that; no go there). Thanks!

2.4l do not have plug wires. There is a cover that sits between the the two cams and should say like Quad 4 on it. It is held down by 4 13mm bolts remve the bolts and disconnect the wiring harness on the end and remove the cover. The plugs are down in there.
