The best-selling cars by gender Women prefer safety, affordability; men like power, luxury We knew something wasn't right with the 2003 movie 2 Fast 2 Furious. Specifically, we could not believe the angry, muscular ex-convict played by Tyrese Gibson would not only tolerate--but want to drive--a purple Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. This was way too cute and girly of a car to be a male protagonist's ride of choice in a film about illegal street racing in cutting-edge Japanese vehicles. Now, based on data generated by Kelley Blue Book last week, we can quantify the Eclipse's femininity: the Eclipse Spyder convertible has the highest percentage of female registrants of any car on the market. The hardtop Eclipse coupe has the fourth highest. The slide show that follows lists the five most popular cars for men and for women. The figures are based on American registrations of new 2005 and 2006 model cars between January of this year and press time. Registration data does not necessarily tell us who is driving the cars--parents put their kids' cars in their names; husbands put their wives' cars in their names and vice-versa--but it is the closest we can come to understanding gender demographics in new-car purchasing. The cars in the slide show are extremely telling. They indicate that, for the most part, women buy cars that are affordable, practical and safe, and with a dash of design flair--as evidenced by such models as the Eclipse and Toyota Motor's RAV4 sport utility vehicle. Men, on the other hand, appear to love luxurious, high-performance cars. The average horsepower of a car on our list of the five most popular vehicles with men is 367; with women, it's 172. And while men are willing to buy feminine cars, women don't go for the testosterone-fueled sports and luxury cars with the same enthusiasm. With the most popular car for women, the Eclipse Spyder, 34.2% of its registrants this year have been men--indicating that the kind of affordable sportiness the car provides cuts across gender lines. Most people like a bargain, after all. But with the most extremely masculine vehicles out there, women don't seem to be interested. No women have registered for one of Honda Motor's Acura NSX sports cars. And with DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG performance sedan, only 1.8% of its registrants this year have been women. The idea that you can sell a woman's car to a man, but you can't sell a man's car to a woman is true not only on the level of individual models, but also for brands in general. The brand that has had the highest percentage of female registrants so far this year, General Motors' Pontiac subsidiary, still sells cars to a buying populace that is 47% male. DaimlerChrysler's Dodge subsidiary, with its trademark aggressive styling and a lineup that includes such macho cars as the Ram pickup and Viper convertible, has the highest percentage of male registrants--and only 14.8% of people who have registered a Dodge this year have been women. Most Masculine Brands Dodge 85.2% Lincoln 84.3% Jaguar 79.8% Porsche 78.2% Infiniti 78.1% Most Masculine Cars 1. Acura NSX 2. Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG 3. Dodge Viper SRT-10 4. GMC Yukon XL 2500 5. Jaguar XJR Most Feminine Brands Pontiac 53.0% Hyundai 47.3% Toyota 47.3% Volkswagen 46.9% Suzuki 45.8% Most Feminine Cars 1. Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder 2. Saturn L300 3. Toyota RAV4 4. Mitsubishi Eclipse 5. Land Rover Freelander

ok, i am a woman, and i would have beggining from general lee's car (dodge charger 1969), to a bmw 325i, bmw645, z4, z8, a honda acura, a ferrari f1, viper or any horsepowered car, v6, v8, whatever. I don't mind if i can see well into the mirrors to put some lipstick on my lips, or if the trunk is big enough to carry the grocery bags. what is important in a car ? the ENGINE. there are many men that drive like most of the chicks, in what u would call a "chick" car. but there are some women (like myself), that care about the same stuff as you guys do. it's just an option. and guess what... i'm not a lesbian ! and i hate automatic cars best regards

It might correspond to that other article I posted about Pontiac being the only American cars bought by democrats. Or it might not.

I was just listening to Tom Leykis, the smartest human in California, who read the report of a different market research firm that discovered the Porsche 911 as the #1 car guys want. Also on the list were the Mitsu Evo, Ford GT, VW Phaeton, BMW 6-series, Jaguar XK8, Maserati Spyder, Mercedes CL, and some others. #1 car women want? Pontiac G6. Other mentions: Suzuki Forenza, VW Beetle, Eclipse convertible, PT Cruiser, Volvo XC70, and a couple Kias. Leykis went on to note that this was "probably written by a self-hating male with a hyphenated last name who sits down to pee," that women are the "cheapest creatures on Earth," and that the list is totally unrealistic because it assumes women are paying with their own money.

Leykis is a syncophantic idiot if he is regurgitating that men in California want VW phaetons? That guy should stick to giving out advice that leads him and others to divorce. I have some very very convincing sales data that tells anyone that more men want vasectomies performed with rusty spoons than phaetons
