My parents had a 2002 and had to replace the regulator.  We have a 2001 and the drivers side window would not go up after I stopped at Sonic for a drink.  That will teach me to go thru a drive-through 75 miles from home at night.  I just ordered an aluminum cable block and will fix it myself.....I'll post the experience!

I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport, that fortunately only the driver side window motor went bad. Got the part for $58 and replaced it myself in 20 minutes. Never go to the dealerships, they rape your wallet!! Of course in saying this I have to admitt I made an appointment with a dealership to repair my moon roof which is stuck open. I don't have time to fix it.

did you have to lubricate the wire???  i've already taken the motor/actuator out of the door.  the wire was mangled up within the spool.  if you have pictures, that would be great.  please email them to wesprice2002@msn.com.  thanks for your help.

Is this problem isolated only to the Jeep Cherokee or is it a flaw in all 2001 Chrysler products. I know of two 2001 Dodge Durangos (mine included) that have had the same issue. I also know of two 01 Cherokees with the same problem... seems to me 01 was a bad year for power windows in the Chrysler Corporation

OK..I bought the aluminum cable block from pocketlogger and because my cables were mangled, I bought some 1/16" wire rope and stops from Lowes.  It took me about 1.5 hours to put it all together.  The biggest problem was getting the cables cut to the proper length.  I straightened the old ones out with a pair of needle nose pliers and vise-gripped the old cable end to the new cable and pulled very taut.  I then marked the new cable and the location of the stops, cut the old cable in half to remove all the parts, slipped them on the new cable, crimped on the stops then put it all together.  Installing the unit in the door took maybe 15 minutes.  It works great!  Total cost...+/- $ 40.00...Thats a heckuva lot better than the $400.00 that the dealer would charge and I have the added bonus of a solid aluminum milled cable block! This should be called the 10% cost fix!  Good luck to all of you, if anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

I just recently bought a 2003 Grand Cherokee Laredo.  It had 32239 miles on it, and I thought this was great.  I've always wanted a Jeep, but I guess i should have done better research.  I just recently had the same problem with my driver's side window.  I dread to think that it will probably happen again!  I purchased an extended warranty with the car, so I'm hoping that this is covered (ya never can be sure with the fine fine fine fine print!!) My Jeep has the radio with the CD and cassette.  In the 2 months I've had the car, the power seats don't go up and down, just back and forth, and the 1st time I went to use the tape player for my daughter, that didn't work either.  I understand I bought a used car, and thankfully an extended warranty, but I thought with 32,000 miles I would be ok.  My Toyota Camry had 100,000 miles at trade in and never a problem, I just wanted an SUV.  I guess my dream of wanting a Jeep, has now turned into a nightmare.  I guess I should have known better, I had a '00 Chrysler minivan that the A/C and the transmission both went at 45,000 miles, to the grand total of $2100.  owning another Chrysler scared me, but I figured I'd give it a chance since I loved the Jeep.  This was my last shot with Chrysler.  I'm hoping these are just flukes and I can really start to enjoy the Jeep instead of regretting it since I have to pay for it for a while!!

Great....looks like we have a long road ahead of us.  My parents gave us their 2001 Grand Jeep Cherokee Laredo three years ago, and in the last couple of months we've had to replace the rotors, brakes, and serpentine belt.  And on Saturday, our front passenger side window went down...and kept going down..and we were out shopping!  On the 30 mile drive home, my husband drove and I held on to the window to keep it from falling all the way down.  We made it home, pulled into the garage.  I gingerly let go, and it stayed.  For a second, then dropped all the way down.  Thank goodness for this site, my husband is going to get the part and do it himself.  The dealership has already gotten $1500 buck from us in the last two months.  Thanks for the concise directions, they are appreciated!

Replacement cable blocks (the part that breaks on the regulator) are available here for $25:

Yes I have the same problem twice the first one to the tune of $400.00. The first I opened up the door panel because I could still hear that the motor was running but could see the problem so I took it to the Stealership and they assured me that I needed a new regulator. When I picked the car up I asked for the old one to see what the problem was it a $1.00 piece of plastic bracket that holds one end of the cable that lifts and lowers the window. two weeks ago window two went I took it apart and guess what the same piece broke on that window also I am in the process of remaking the problem piece out of aluminum that will not break off. This problem is faulty design or material selection but either way it should not cost consumers $400.00 a pop for their mistake.

Best advice never own a Jeep. Worst vehicle on the planet. This door thing has happended to hundreds of thousand of people and Jeep doesnt change a thing.  The brakes also lock up, burn up and will cost you 800 dollars for all new front brakes.
That said you need to just buy a brand new regulator for your year Jeep on ebay - dont get some homemade part and cables from home depot. The whole regulator in one piece... everything...new motor already on it too... brand new cost me 45.00 on ebay and went in pretty easy and works great. Best thing is its better than the real Jeep part and will not break again most likly.   Here are detailed step by step instructions on removal and installation of the regulator ...the year may be different and the regulator slightly different but same removal and install.

Good morning,

I have a similar but opposite problem on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. The drivers window will not open, the other windows all work fine.
Does this sound like a fuse when the other 3 windows still work? I don't know, I looked in the fuse box under the dash and in the one under the hood but it dosen't say ''windows'' in either one. Can anyone help / advise me on this? Thank you!

This must be more than a 2001 model problem and simply inherent in all Grand Cherokees.  My 2004 in the last 2 months has had this happen twice, the 2d today just as the rain swept in.  Heard a loud pop like someone shot the window and down it dropped.  The first time it just dropped down when the car was sitting in the garage.  Amazing, and in a SUV that has never been offroad.  Car lightly used and driven.  Ashame such a basic function so poorly engineered.

I have a 2002 JGC-SE. The driver's side window "popped" today (05/16/07). I was searching for repair options/recalls and found this forum. I figured I'd document the problem here. My Jeep has 31K, and it has also been +80* the last few days here in VA. I see that the heat may have been a contributing factor in previous posts.
To date the dealer could not find any recalls associated with this problem. I will take the advise of a previous poster and call Chrysler for a refund.

thanks.

After reading all of the problems with the plastic piece I decided not replace a part that has a high probability of failure. I also had the cable tangled in the spool. I was able to disassemble this and re-spool.

As for the plastic piece that holds the cable...I used 19 gauge wire (autozone, $3.99). I wrapped the wire tightly around the cable just behind the lug leaving about two inches on each end of the wire free. I took the two ends and ran through the hole in the plastic piece a couple of times. I made sure the cable was snug up against the broken plastic piece and tied off the wire.

The cheap fix seems to be working for a month now and I've used the window several times a day. MacGuyver would be proud.
