Hi , I just went thru the Bad regulator deal last week, My 2001 Grand cherokee had a frozen drivers window ( how do you know, I get off work at 2:45 Am) that broke when I tried to lower window. My broke the ears on the lower pulley (1/2 round platic piece). I repaired it at no cost but some learning involved. I first removed 3 screws total in door panel ( where well is to grab and close door, behind inside latch, and front upper corner under small plug. Than you can carefully pry off the panel (push in plastic clips), Their are (on my limited) 3 plugs to unplug (1 has a small red clip that needs moved over and then squeeze back to separate (goes to window motor.) after removing door panel, I removed speaker with 4 screws and pulled the moisture barrier off.the motor and regulator come out together after removing 4 bolts in regulator and 3 in motor(all thru door panel easy to get to) It pays to have window 3/4 ways down if possible because their are 2 hairpin clips that hold the window to the regulator.(My window broke all the way up and was a little harder to pull pins). Since ears were missing to hold plastic pulley in and no replacement is available ,I drilled a small in the center of the plastic pulley. The square on back of my pully was still good to hold pully in location ,so I put a wide fender washer on back ,a screw thru pully with double nuts on back. ( do not want it to come loose. Now, with mine when I put cable back on, it had slack in cable. So after getting brave (or stupid) I took 3 screws out of motor housing and gently pried the cable housing off. What I found was a single pulley that is double wound that both cables attach to. As one unwinds ,the other one is wound up so slack stays the same.Mine had lost a wind somehow when it came apart and created the slack.I put the pulley 1/2 way in the motor casing to hold the 1 cable in position and wound the cable coming in from the other side 1 more wound and put motor back together. Here is the fun. Cable was so tight it would not reach pulley.I had to unbolt lower pulley( I had just installed)and get help to hold all spring pressure and cable in alignment ( will make sense when you see unit). And just bearly forced pulley back in place and installed washer and nuts. Cable was definitely too tight. Plugged motor to jeep and ran window motor up and down a few times( not in jeep) and this tightened up the cable windings in the motor and distributed the load and cable relaxed as it should. I know this sounds like a lot of work ,but once done its not bad and Jeep wanted $231 for regulator and motor and over $400 to fix it there, so if it continues to work,I will be able to tackle the next one (my wife has 2002 Grand cherokee to go with my 2001).My thought is the lower pulley will break first due to plastic ears where top pulley has a steel rivet holding it. New to this site and hope this helps someone, ( i am going to hunt a steel cable replacemeny pulley with a bearing to replace the plastic. Randy

As far as getting a window to stay up.I just cut a 4 x 1 board to length and ran a saw lengthwise across 1 end to make a slot that straddled the window mount. that held my window tight while I figured out a way to repair the regulator ,which I posted elsewhere. good luck!

I had the same problem with mine but it happened about 3 months ago. I shimmed it up for the time being but it is starting to slide back down.
I just assume fix the thing myself instead of paying that ridiculous price.
I actually would be intrested in some of those aluminum cable blocks, and the lengths of your cables etc.

Hello,
I just called to complain about the plastic clip breaking. Went through the whole hassle of entering in the VIN, only for them to cut me off twice.
I have worked in the engineering field for five years now. I just can't see if someone has any experience at all with torque, why they would put a piece of plastic in such a high stress situation, and I know they have to have experience to be in that kind of high level of engineering. I mean if you are going to put a plastic clip there then why not put plastic cables?
I will try again later to get through and formally complain to them, and see what I can get out of them. Which will probably be nothing. But thank you for the information on contacting them

Yes!!!!! I unfortunately have had the same problem. We bought our 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited edition in Aug. of 2006 and we specifically bought a new car to go to Iowa from Washington State. We had the jeep for a week, and the moment we left our driveway to go to Iowa, the passenger front window did exactly what yours did. On our way home from Iowa, it did it again!!! Since we bought duct tape for the first window, we luckily had it on hand and taped up now the drivers side window. We still have not fixed it. To make the nightmare worse, when we drove through Montana, a semi hit a rock and it shattered our windshield, we had to tape that one up since we could do nothing. Now we have three broken windows and are unsure of whether we are going to eat it up and pay for the windows or eat the depreciation and trade it in. Oh yeah, and now the heater fans don't work because of a harness or something. Yeah, this jeep has been a nightmare and I will NEVER buy another jeep again and I will let everyone know the problems I've had if they ever consider a jeep. When I got back from Iowa, I called the dealership that the jeep came from and they said there is no recall for the windows. Sandra

I couldnt help but LMAO at the lady stating this is a safty issue because SHE taped a black trash bag over the window opening, she created the safty issue of visibility, not chrysler !, i gurantee chysler does not reccomend this even temporarily, obviously with as many replies as there is to this thread there is a definate poor design problem, unfortunatly that still doesnt make it a safty issue, this wouldnt even qualify as a silent recall, if chysler corp. discovered that at 80 mph the windshield had a even slight possibility of blowing through into the drivers face , you can bet there would be a recall immediatly, a door glass falling down just isnt unsafe, with the price associated with the repair it is understandably frustrating, still not a safty issue, after being in the automotive repair industry for over 20 years, i can assure all of you screaming japaneese, their window regulators are every bit and more of an exspence

I agree Japanese may be no better, but still say Chrysler has little regard for their customers. When the brake, transmission, window regulator problems carry thru year after year and body style after body style, you can't convince me Chrysler doesn't know about the defects and still goes ahead and builds them in. With a 2001 GC Lmted and a 2002 GC laredo in out garage and with 3 fellow workers with 2001 thru 2004 jeeps (i know ,all same body style) ,I see the same problems plague them as people had with their earlier body styles. It will take time to see what happens with the 2005 and newer Grand Cherokees. I hope they wake up , I really like jeep, but think quality is suffering.

Hey, I was just checking out these boards, when I came across your posts. Did Chrysler send anyone a letter with the "good will" refund? Or any other form of "admission of responsibility"? Would you mind sending me an electronic copy? I am having the same issue with my windows, on top of never ending other problems. I will be requesting a "goodwill" refund from the dealership, but if they decline to help me I will be taking them to small claims court. I would love to have some admission of responsibiliy such as a previous goodwill payment for the same problem.
Please let me know if you would be willing to help.
Thanks

I took your advice and boutht the unit from www.monsterautoparts.com.They were cheaper than pepboys and the item was in stock. I believe the brand they sell id doorman or dorman. Pep boys had it on backorder for a few months at least. The install was pretty easy and just as described by mentalone.Thank you for the advice.

JeepPoor: Was searching on the internet for some type of a diagram that would show how to do repairs on the windows of a Grand Jeep Cherokee. I could not believe when I came across this site. There are so many of us who have encountered the same problem with these windows. Some it was the cable or plastic pieces, some it was the regulator some it was the actuator. Unbelievable!! Our driver's side window broke 4 months ago, took it to a Jeep dealer and paid $300+ to have it repaired. Now the passenger side window just fell down, we are not paying another $300.00. We'll figure it out on our own. Does anyone know where we can find an actual diagram of the door for a 2001 Grand Jeep Cherokee. I will pursue this with Chrysler, this should definitely be a recall and I think it is a safety issue.
I just replaced my daughter's window regulator and motor. Got it off ebay for $55.00 brand new. Works great and took me about 1.5 hours by myself the 1st time. Next one will go easier. I have 2 Grand Cherokke LTD. Both are my daughters. One is a 2001 and the other a 2002. 2001 has been replaced 3 times and the 2002 has been replaced 3 times. I submitted both to Jeep for consideration on reimbursement. They reimbursed the 2002 and are considering the 2001. I don't know if I am the first person who actually got reimbursed. If you log on to Jeep's website you'll have to find the customer service section and it tells you what you have to do. They want all original receipts, cancelled checks, work order's. It worked for me. I did not have all original stuff and they still paid. Good Luck!

Hello. I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee L. The drivers side window went out about a year ago, the passenger side went out in December of 2006. The dealer I spoke to in Georgia, wanted $900.00 to fix just one of them. Of course I did not have it repaired. Instead, my husband got the window back up and used tape to keep it up. The passenger side is also taped up now. I am going to take the advice of another person I saw on this site and call Detroit to see what my options are about them paying for them. Thank you, Peggy

Both my dirvers side and front passenger windows are broken, will not go up or down. I too did not have the money for repairs. I also have trouble with the tail/brake lights not working propely. My liftgate works just fine, but I have never been able to lock the thing. I have not seen anything on the web about the the taillift or brake/tail lights.
