Sadly, I must join the rest of you with window problems on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I just bought it not even a week ago from a used car dealership. Of course there was no warrantee. So the day before yesterday I was drivng and went to put my drivers side window down and all of a sudden it fell. The dealer won't do anything for me except give me "his deal" at the auto repair shop that he goes to. So I was searching online to find out if there was a detailed deciption of how to do it yourself. I only wish I had seen this site before I bought the car. So to answer your question "JeepPoor" I found some diagrams to show you exactly what to do. However, the directions from the ealier post is really descriptive so with both you should be able to accomplish it yourself. I can't attach the images but you should be able to click on them. If not copy and paste the whole line to your address box and click go: http://www.wkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_2302305_fig_01.jpg http://www.wkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_2302305_fig_02.jpg http://www.wkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_2302305_fig_03.jpg http://www.wkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_2302305_fig_04.jpg http://www.wkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_2302305_fig_05.jpg

My power window on the front passenger side stopped working a few months ago. It made a popping noise when I was letting it up and then it wouldn't go up all the way. When we got it up, it fell right back down. I didn't even bother trting to get it fixed, because I knew it was going to be costly. It is being held up in place with a screwdriver right now. Also, has anyone had a problem with the break lights not working and the liftgate not opening. This happened to me a few days ago and I haven't gotten it checked out yet. I was wondering if there had been any recalls for this problem. I have checked the internet, but have yet to find anything for the liftgate and break lights. Any suggestions?

I too found this forum looking for solutions to this power window problem.
I have a '04 Grand Cherokee, and I've had both my front power windows go out within a month of each other. Luckily, I was still under warranty so the dealer replaced both for free.
Yesterday, however, my driver's side rear window went out, and now I am out of warranty so I am looking to do this repair on my own because the dealer quoted me about $425.
Here's some more info from the Jeeps Unlimited message boards.

This is crazy... Same thing with my 2001 Grand Cherokee. Rear passenger door - broke. Dealer quoted me 475.00 to repair. I have playing cards wedged between window and jam to hold in place. What to do from here?

your steps worked great for replacing the window actuator and motor. I bought the whole assembly from monsterautoparts.com $99.00 with shiping. It took about an hour and the end result was perfect. Monster Autoparts shipment arrived in 3 days and was exactly what I ordered so hats off to them too. Once again thanks for the good info.

Hi-I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, live in South Africa and like it seems many owners who raised there windows the window collapsed down. Problem the plastic cable holder that secures both ends to the window bracket - breaks the top tie - not suprising as it's plastic with incredible torque when raising the window. This is clearly a design fault. Here the Chrysler agent want R1950-00 (about $280 for the part alone)! One can repair fairly easily: The brocken plastic clip can be replaced with a bolt through the bracket (that slides up and down the main strut). The bolt is then tightly bolted to the bracket. I then cut with a hack saw 2 grooves on the top of the nut for the cables to be secured in. After placing cables in grooves place another nut on top so the cables are sandwiched between the nuts.I can supply details if necessary- works very well. asarkin@tiscali.co.za South Africa

Well....y'all know the drill.
I lost both the driver and passenger side front windows on my first day of vacation last Saturday. The first one went while the temperature was ~40°F. I rode about 15 minutes to the next exit at 75mph. The second one went about 2 hours later. At least it had warmed up to near 70°F at that point. What were the odds of both going within hours of each other.....crazy.
I've done quite a bit of reading and even tried to fix my passenger side myself (with the dad's help). We were close, but ultimately, the cable was not winding up correctly insdide its chamber. This resulted in the the cable becoming unusable I think.
I've found this on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/01-04-Jeep-Grand-Cherokee-WINDOW-REGULATOR-motor-LH_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33706QQihZ018QQitemZ280041647438QQrdZ1
This is 1/4 the price of the dealership, and 1/2 the price of most other regulator/motor combos I've seen online.
Has anyone used this place, or can anyone see anything that might prevent this from working? They offer a warranty, and if it does not come as advertised (direct bolt in with no mods required), eBay would see that I get my money back. I can't see a reason not to try them.
Thanks for any feedback.
Mark

I too have joined the Grand Cherokee window regulator club... On my last GC, both front windows failed. I just got an 04 and the same thing. The solution is the aluminum part that Mike makes on his CNC machine. As long as you don't mess with the switch once the window fails, you won't mess up the cables. If they come unwound at all, you just have to take the three screws out that hold the pulley assembly to the motor and re-wrap the cables. I personally wouldn't want to replace this part with a dealer or after market part. They all seem to have the same design flaw. That tension bearing part where the cables terminate absolutely shouldn't be made of plastic. There are also other plastic parts that will most likely fail (like the pulley at the bottom of the regulator arm that just clips into place. I fixed that on my older jeep with a bolt and nut after melting the back of the clip so it was flush with the regulator arm. If you buy a replacement regulator and it comes in mostly plastic (which seems to be the case), you will have the problem again. My dad also had the same problem with his Durango. This isn't just a Jeep thing, it's Chrysler wide I presume.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi,
I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty and the same thing happened to me. My window just slid down and won’t come up. I contacted Jeep and was told it was the window regulator and it would cost about $380 to fix. Someone said they will only recall it if it is a safety hazard. I think it is because I have had to drive with a garbage bag taped to window blocking my visibility and also making it very hot inside the car. We live in Florida. Not to mention things flying into my car. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen!!! I am so disappointed that Jeep won’t recall this problem. I hope everybody has called or written to complain:

Yes, I also have had to replace all the power window regulators (drivers) side 3 times on my 2001 Jeep Grand Chrokee. I was told by dealer service manager that this part fails quite offen on the Grand Cherokee. He thinks they fail due climate changes and poor materials. I like the aluminum idea. How much? Thank you for the D.I.Y. instructions.

*** man jeep must be pretty bad at this power window thing.
i have a problem with my 1997 chevy z71 power window i roll it down but it seems that the motor doesnt have enough power to roll it all the way down, so i gotta push the window as im pushing the button to get it go go down, same thing with rolling the window up. i think the reason why it does this is because i bought a *cheap* motor from discount auto parts. but o well. but other than that i havent had many problems with my chevy. (after i replaced the horrific transmission problem! that was a nightmare!!!)
