I Have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, I have had all 3 motors in 3 windows replaced.  Today I fixed rear passenger side window, I was cleaning of the Duct tape from the fixed window, went around cleaning other windows when low and behold the rear drivers side window motor brakes as well. NOW all 4 window motors have kicked the bucket. Now does anyone know if there is a reacall or has anyone else recieved restitution from this same problem? The jeep is 4 years old and I find this an outrage. any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated. and all the motors were origanal factory motors. I think this is a factory defect.

mentalone:
I did find the following if you are daring and want it replaced by yourself:

1)
There are two difference sites,
"The only difference is that I bought the regulator and motor for $90.00 + $10 for shipping at www.monsterautoparts.com. The whole process took me 45 minutes. I can't wait to stop by the dealership that quoted me between $450-$500 to replace, of which $225 was just for the part. "

2)
"I ordered my new regulator from power up auto. http://www.powerupauto.com/ for 40+ dollars. I checked the site today and the price has already gone up to 90$. The price is still not too bad and I got it within a few days.I recommend that you send a email to them to confirm you are ordering the right one for your year vehicle.

INSTRUCTIONS:
It is easy to remove once you figure it out or have instructions...Remember, don’t try to use your window while it’s broke or you will burn up the electric motor. I taped the window in the up position until I got my new regulator.

1. Remove the door panel (3 screws: one in armrest and one near rearview mirror and last one is a hex head located in the door handle well)

2. Pop door panel off easily using a wide flat tip screw driver or something that’s plastic, thin and wide to prevent scratching… start popping it off at the bottom of the door in a corner….there are a bunch of plastic clips holding it on. Don't worry if a couple of them break you can order a few new ones for a couple bucks... No problem.

3. Once you get the panel popped out some, you need to disconnect the power window cable, power mirror cable, and door and lock controls so you can completely remove the panel. (cables have a little clip on the back of them, squeeze it to unlock and remove) (Door and lock metal rods have a plastic retainer, gently turn them and then easily pull out of their respective holes)

4. Remove the speaker (4 screws and unplug connector)

5. Remove the plastic cover (I had a black plastic cover under the door panel and it was attached with some black rubber like glue. The glue is none drying so if you remove it carefully, a little at a time it will stay on the plastic and you can re use it.

6. Where the window comes through the top of the door or ...the part that your arm rests on if you hang your arm out the open window....there are 2 rubber seals that the window comes up between when it’s raised. Remove the inner one (towards the inside of the car) you can pry it up and it will pop out. Be sure to save the 2 sponge looking things that are under each end if your model has them.

7. Take out the 2 clips that hold the window to the regulator. You will have to reach inside the door and pull them out, one on the left and right...no problem.

8. Window removal: Once you have removed the clips holding the window to the regulator you have to gently work the two window “nipples” out of the regulator holes. Once you have it up a little past the regulator window holding piece…turn the window so that the rear of it is up and comes out first….then work it upwards to remove it from the door. It should come out easily, if not take a break because you don’t want to buy glass too.

9. Unplug the power window cable from the window motor (located in the center of the door)

10. Remove screws that hold the regulator and the window motor to the inside of the door (I think there were 4 regulator screws and 3 holding the motor, they are different sizes) they are the only screws left.

11. Push the window motor cable inside the door, then tilt the entire unit from it’s up and down position to a horizontal left-right position. I then patiently fed it through the hole at the bottom right side of the door…under the hole where the speaker used to be.

12. Once out remove 2 screws? (I can’t remember but you will see) to remove the window motor from the regulator. Clean off the surface of the window motor and attach it to the new regulator. If you buy the regulator from http://www.powerupauto.com/Jeep1.html like I did, it comes with basic instruction on how to connect the motor to the regulator.

Install in reverse."

This exact same issue has happened to me with my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2001 - on  the drivers side window.

Reading your post, I went to the POWERUP website to order a window regulator and I am a little confused because they give you a choice between Left Front or Right Front Regulators. I assume that LEFT FRONT would mean Drivers Side.

What do you think.

Thanks for any reply!

I bought a used '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo a couple of years ago.  It has 55K miles on it now. I had to have one window repaired a few months ago.  Two weeks ago I had to have a second window repaired and a third window broke last week.  This makes 3 windows in the past 6 months at $340 for each one. THIS IS CRAZY!!  That's over $1000 in 6 months. I'm sure that the fourth window will break any day now. I will never buy another Jeep.  I expect more out of a 4 year old vehicle.

Same problem on 02 GC Limited. I am going to try the DIY fix. This is nuts, this vehicle has had more problems in 48K miles than my 1982 300D has had in 300K miles. I will never buy another American car if this is the kind of quality that they build into 'Semi' Luxury SUV's!

On a side note, I took this in to get an idea of what the trade in at a dealer would be with the broken window...$8500! for a car that was 40K + 4 years ago...now thats crazy!

I've got a 1999.  Sounds like a similar failure.  Unfortunately the regulator and motor seem to be sold together for this model year.  My motor is fine and now I've got an extra.

If anyone needs a motor - it's yours for price of shipping.  I'll send you the regulator, too, if you want to repair it.  PM ***

Fantastic reply! - I just took your advice and bought a replacement motor/regulator from your listing. I will follow your advice for installation. You have saved me $100s of dollars and I appreciate your time to detail the procedures. You are a star! Many, many thanks.

I am having trouble with both front doors on my 2002 Grand. The best way I found to keep my windows up was SUCTION CUPS on the inside of the window. I had to carefully grab the window with needle nose pliers and pull it up until I could grab it. Then I pulled it all the way up and put 3 to 4 suction cups along the bottom edge. I bought the small ones (about 1 1/4"). I moistened them with good ole fashion spit and slid them under the bottom rubber edge. Once dry they wont budge. It might be easier if a buddy holds the window up to the max while you apply the cups.   Good Luck.

geez i see everyone has problems with thier jeeps. Everyone told me before i bought my 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo that jeep stands for needing repairs all the time, and expensive ones. I have fixed my window once and now another time in the last 6 months. it really sucks but sometimes it's worth it.

hey guys I just went to monsterautoparts.com and they have a box to enter a coupon #, if anyone knows a valid # to enter it would probably be an additional savings. Anything to help a poor guy out. Thanks.  I am going to contact Chrysler to see if they will help, if not, I'll probably be ordering some parts soon

Hi,

Just bought a Grand Cherokee with a few issues.
Both rear windows are stuck in the up position. According to the workshop manual you have to have the window in the down position to remove the actuator/regulator to change the motor. If I remove all 5 or 6 bolts holding the actuator in position, will the window fall low enought to get access to the bolts holding the window in place. Is this the right methodolodgy?

Any help much appreciated.

I have had my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee for about 4 years and theres about 65,000 miles on it now.

I have replaced the driver side and passanger side front window motors. ($700.00)

I have also replaced the transmision in my cherokee. ($2500.00)

I have replaced the arms that hold the hood up. ($150.00)

I thank God everyday I purchased a bumper to bumper 5year 100,000 mile warranty for only $1,100. They replaced all of the above other than my $50.00 deductible.

But now:

I found out last week my rotors are worn down already when I have never even needed to replace my brake pads. So it seems the rotors wore down faster than the pads?

There was a settlement for this calaper and rotor problem, but it had to be fixed while the vehicle was still under the factory warranty.

I also noticed rust on my car. The paint is fully in tact but by the passanger side  rear tire there is some rust coming on. I wash my car every week and keep it in the garage so how in the hell is there rust on a 6 year old vehicle.

I will never buy a jeep again!!!!!

Just to follow up. I called monsterautoparts.com and they have'nt had a coupon in 1 1/2 to 2 years. Also, powerupauto only has parts in stock for his local shops (based in Fla), and will not have any more to send out for several months.  Sounds like parts are getting scarcer and more difficult to locate.  Has anyone dealt with 1aauto.com, their regulators look different and they claim they are more reliable than factory parts. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks,  Doug

Was searching on the internet for some type of a diagram that would show how to do repairs on the windows of a Grand Jeep Cherokee.  I could not believe when I came across this site.  There are so many of us who have encountered the same problem with these windows.  Some it was the cable or plastic pieces, some it was the regulator some it was the actuator.  Unbelievable!! Our driver's side window broke 4 months ago, took it to a Jeep dealer and paid $300+ to have it repaired.  Now the passenger side window just fell down, we are not paying another $300.00.  We'll figure it out on our own.  Does anyone know where we can find an actual diagram of the door for a 2001 Grand Jeep Cherokee.  I will pursue this with Chrysler, this should definitely be a recall and I think it is a safety issue.
