If you buy cheap aftermarket regulators then you will have problems....I am a diamond certified chryler(jeep)/ASE Master Technitian and I worked for Jeep for years and there is a huge quality difference between factory and aftermarket...also who you have install it...does the track get lubed on install...are the lift plates still straight...and theey aligned properly.  Lets just say when it comes to parts you get what you pay for

Yes Arkansas..I have replaced my third window regulator on my 2002 Grand Cherokee...and it is making me crazy. I think we should organize a class action against Chrysler on this issue.. Just the class action papers I just completed on the Warped brake rotors..they refused to fix under warranty.  Let me know if you hear anything?

My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (45k mi) just did this!  Window made a crunching noise when I was rolling down and a few minutes later went completely into the door.  The best part is that I was rolling window down to adjust the side view mirror which is also broken (so loose that when I shut the car door it moves completely out of position.)  At least I do know, now, to call the dealer.  What a hassle.

Well I just had this happen as well. 2001 JGC Laredo. 65k miles. Rolled the window up and CRACK! stopped working and slowly worked its way fully open.

I took it apart and it looks like playing around with the switch before I knew what was wrong may have screwed it up more (or maybe not, know knows.

In any case, this is what happened to mine:

The plastic piece that the cable ends are in that is mounted to the part that holds the window (and moves up and down) broke.  The part that holds the top cable cracked. This let the window fall because the cable wasn't there to hold it.

But in playing around with the switch before I took it apart, it jammed up the cables inside the motor.  The motor is connected to a drum that has grooves in it. The cables wrap around the drum in the grooves and each terminate in an "anchor" in the center of the drum.  Apparently because the cable got loose, it bunched up and got mangled.  It will no longer sit in the grooves because it's bent and flattened in spots.

So a 50 cent plastic peice is going to cause me to need to get a whole new regulator.

Actually I might try to repair it first (new cables and new anchor block on the slider peice).  Aparently there is some good money to be made if I can make a repair kit.

Anyone else find out what their failure mode was?

2 days ago the exact same thing happend to my 2001 limited (77k). After removing the regulator/motor assembly I discovered the plastic retaining block on the slide broke which released the upper cable.

Unfortunately the plastic pieces are molded on the slider part. I don't think any of the "super glue" stuff would hold either. It actually looks like the plastic dried out and got brittle.

If someone has a good right front slider laying around please pm me. Maybe we can work something out.

Thanks for the great instructions, they were perfect.  This is the first time I changed a window regulator and it only took me about 2 hours.  Should be able to do the next one in less then an hour and I'm sure there will be a next one.  This is the second regulator replaced on a 2004 Cherokee, first one was under warranty, and I couldn't believe how much they wanted to charge for the one I replaced myself, anybody can do it with your instructions.  Also powerupauto.com was great, they had my part shipped to me in 3 days and it was only $100 total.  Thanks again for the instructions, you just saved me over $400.  The dealership wanted $250 for the part and almost $300 in labor, what a rip-off.

So $4.32 and 5 hours later, I have repaired my window.  I changed the cables (Lowes has the cable for $.21 a foot, 1/16" uncoated) because mine were mangled. The plastic cable holder on the slide which broke was replaced with one I made out of aluminum. That one won't be breaking any time soon!

I have pics if anyone is interested..

2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo - same problem just happened to me two days ago.  Was rolling up drivers side window and "pop", then window stopped rolling up.  It's just hanging about 3/4 and even though I can manually push up the glass, it keeps falling back down.   Why this rash of July/August Jeep windows?  It's weird.....I'm going to take suggestion and start by calling Chrysler using this forum as backup data.  Obviously it's engineering/design flaw but Chrysler isn't going to volunteer to fix anything for free unless we ask.  Anybody have a good phone number?  I just paid $700 to replace the fan unit last wek after it was overheating.

Thanks from Dallas

Just found this website on Google.  My 2001 GCL right front window made a cracking sound and started sliding down into the door.  That's the second time this has happenend.  The other time was the driver's windonw.  I was looking for hints on how to get the door apart and discovered this forum.

I think it's heat that's breaking the plastic parts.  I live in Florida and on each occasion the side that I usually park facing the sun is the one on which I get the breakage.  The last time was in July.  This time the last week in August.  We have had an exceptionally warm summer and the day this last window broke my car registered close to a hundred F when I started it up.

This does it with Jeep for me.  Bad brake rotors, bad serpentine belt, bad fuel filter system, bad fuel pump and bad water pump, all at my expense.  Unfortunately it appears that US owned auto companies focus quality control on appearance items.  Looks like it's time for another Honda.

Hey all,
Same problem: 2001 Gr Cherokee, the plastic cable retainer on the window regulator slide broke.  There is a guy on Ebay selling refurbished assemblies for $40 - $50 plus $20 s/h (!!??).  Are those ok?  Any thoughts?

I just had my passenger window regulator go bad.  I was told that this is a common problem and there have been no recalls on this part to my knowledge.  They can recall all kinds of useless items but apparently they can't recall all the window regulators that are snapping.  My local auto parts store has the part on back order indefinitly.

Wow guys, sorry I didn't know I had a bunch of PMs!

Hmm, seems the forum doesn't allow pics.

Basically I removed the plastic piece (which actually wasn't very easy) but without messing up the other plastic that keeps the thing on the track.  I was left with a rectangular hole.

Part I made: (sorry forum doesnt allow images or links)

its essencially the same exact part, but in aluminum. The block and the flat back peice screw together and clamp onto the slide.

Mounted:

Heres me putting it together.  If your cables aren't screwed up, it wouldn't be too hard to fix. My cables were screwed up so I had to replace them.  Sizing them properly took a little work.

If you have any questions, email me directly at support at pocketlogger dot com. I don't check here often.

Seems like there might be a market for the cable block.  I can bang these out on my CNC for a reasonable price if anyone is interested..

I paid nearly $30,000 for my Jeep.  I assume it had "factory" parts and now I am about to replace my second regulator/motor.  Did I get what I paid for?????

So, I could spend $400 for a defective part or $90 dollars for a part that may or not be defective and do the work myself.  I may not be a Diamond Certified Chrysler(Jeep)/ASE Master Technician but it's mainly just replacing a part.  It's not rocket science.
