Same problem here. First pass side regulator went then 2 years later the driver side went. I went to autozone and bought one for $99 with a lifetime warranty. Took me 30 min to install it. Very easy install.

I own the exact same vehicle, 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Special Edition. When i first purchased my vehicle, it didn't take long for things to start failing, with the air conditioning expelling unbearably hot air from the vents. I had this fixed luckily under warranty. Next the hood wouldn't stay open on its own so i carry a 2x4 with me to prop the hood open, which the dealer wants $100 dollars for. Then my car began to overheat and when i took it in the dealer said it was a problem with the radiator tank, and said it needed to be replaced for $250 and 2 hours of labor at $70/hr. I decided to do it on my own and went to Autozone for the parts and since I went to high school with a guy that works there, he told me that what it sounded like to him was a thermostat which only costs $23.00 dollars and only took me 30 minutes to replace, then finally both of my back windows have stopped working and it seems Im not alone with this problem, and I, for one, won't take it to the dealer for him to tell me that he needs to change the most expensive part when thats not the case. I'll just take it apart myself and see which part isn't working and fix it myself. I'll post the reply and let you guys know how it went......

My power window regulator on my 2002 grand cherokee  on the passenger side went out yesterday.  I refused to pay 400 to get it replace so i did myself.  it only took me like 45mins and 85 dollars for the part it was pretty simple.

I think my problem is the little plastic piece- do I need to buy the whole regulator?

Once it happens, give the car power so you can roll them up and then click lock and then unlock, either on the key fob or the door panel. Then the windows will stay up.

I hve a 2006 Jeep Liberty Sport, and it has the same problem with the power window regulators.  One broke while under warranty, and the dealer fixed it.  The second broke just a month or so later, but it was now out of warranty.

They quoted me around $500 to fix it.

I found a factory built regulator on ebay for around $110.  Am going to try to fix it myself.

Wonder if it is going to need 2 people to fix it since someone may have to hold onto the window once the clips are out so it won't fall and break or is this something one person can do?

Looks like Jeep is still ignoring the problem and still using defective regulators.

I hate to keep having to fix these.  I wonder why I drove it for years before they broke, but now they are all starting to break?  Both the ones that broke were in the backseat and were rarely if ever used.  I just walked out one day to find the window had sunk down and wouldn't stay up, but the motor still ran.

It will only take one person to change the regulator. What I always do is run 3 strips of duct tape from the inside of the widow and over the top of the door and down the outside of the window. Never dropped one yet.
I use this procedure for every make and model, when changing regulators and window motors.

This is a common problem on many Chrysler vehicles. Dakota and Durango are 2 others that I know of.
There is a way to repair the window for nothing. I've done it 4 times with success each time. The important thing to remember is to STOP USING THE WINDOW as soon as you realize it's broken. Here's how to fix it:
Using Mentalone's repair instructions (posted 8=17-06), remove the regulator. Instead of replacing the regulator, you can fix it. In all the cases I've dealt with, the cable has pulled out of a weak plastic retainer. So it makes sense to think if you simply reinforce the plastic with metal. it should hold. It's that simple.. sort of.
You'll need to disassemble the motor and rewind the cable. That's assuming the pulley isn't destroyed from continually trying to use the window after it's broken.
To fix the broken plastic, take a heavy wire hanger (or similar wire) and cut a piece about 3" long bend the wire in a U shape just wide enough to fit around the cable. Place the cable back in the retainer as close to the original position as possible. slide the U over the cable and through the metal bracket. Bend the ends of the wire around the backside to hold it in place. Sounds pretty simple and it is. The difficult part is getting the regulator back together so it's operable again. With some mechanical skillyou should be able to do it easily. The last one I did took me about an hour and 15 minutes - start to finish.
I hope this helps

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power Window Defect, I've got about 73k miles.  With the temps in the single digits, my windshield wiper fluid was not working in the front and rear and the driver's side window was not going down.

A few days later, the temps warmed up, the wiper fluid began to work but not the driver window.  I hear the motor running so I tried to push the window down a bit to put it back on it's track. That did not work, now the window slowly slides down into the door.

Sounds like the same problem everyone else is experiencing. Called up the dealer, they are quoting $400.  I'm going to buy the parts and fix it myself, but it is freezing outside!

The power seat does not go up and down anymore.  Had to replace the Oil Pressure switch about 2 years ago.  Otherwise not many other issues with the Jeep for the past 7 years, but it seems like the problems are about to begin.....

tips tips tips.....

seems that autozone can special order the window regulators with or without the motors, for less than half what mopar wants..

check your local parts store...  talk to the parts manager if they tell you that they are not available..  some of the parts clerks don't know where to find them in the computer...

or look it up your self on the various parts stores web sites...

if you don't think that you can install them.. some are not easy.. take them to one of the many window glass installation centers... the national chains.. or the independant ones that are around the salvage yards.. they have lots of expericance in putting them in...  and usually don't mind if you bring your own parts...

if anybody needs part numbers.. to help...get them...   send me a private message... with year make model engine size, and the name of the large city where you shop.. i will try my best to get you the info you need..

Platinum Motors

There is a local used luxury car dealership that has fascinated me every time I drive by called Platinum Motors. I’m not sure if any of you have seen it; their inventory is vast with inexpensive quality vehicles. The majority of which I see are BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Land Rover and Maserati. Trade-In your outdated vehicle and cruise in style!

If you want to check their inventory out, full descriptions and pictures are available on their website @ www.PlatinumMotors.us/
