This is a very common problem with any of the Jeep Grand Cherokee's. I own an auto electric repair business. The most common vehicle that I work on is the Jeep Grand Cherokee and there power windows. Instead of going to the dealership for parts, you can purchase the parts online brand new for $150ea. for the rear door regulators and they install easily. Remove the panel and wedge the glass in the open position. There are 2 pressure clips that hold the glass to the regulator, remove these before wedging the glass open. There are three 10mm screws that hold the motor to the door panel, unplug the motor and remove the screws. There are 4 10mm screws that hold the regulator to the door panel. The whole unit comes out together. Insert the new regulator and motor combo back into the door and start with the regulator bolts and then the motor bolts. Plug in the motor and run the regulator to the bottom of the door at the opening where you can see both clips. Now remove the wedge from the glass and lower it to the regulator clip and insert pressure clips. The whole job should take no more than 45 minutes and you can save a ton of money. You can find your parts at http://napaonline.com, http://autozone.com or I use a national parts locator for SALVAGE YARDS; http://www.car-part.com they often cary the NEW replacement parts for these because it is such a common problem. If anyone has any other problems reguarding power accessory repair on there vehicles, you can always contact me through my website: http://www.mobileautoelectric.com

Well, I called Chrysler - ha, what a joke - "if enough complaints come in on this matter they may issue a recall but none at this time.  However, if I take it to the dealership and they declare this to be a faulty part, I will be reimbursed upon review."  I gave him an earful though - stinkin window did break on me - pop and fell-as I was driving at high speed and w/bad weather approaching. Ergh! I feel bad for the guy w/the dog and the other who had his at the airport when this happened. And these people are doing nothing about it! Oh well, at least I tried.  Good luck everyone...

After reading the the first 5 pages of this forum, I'm jumping to the end with my 2001 JGC testimony       $400 replaced the front passenger about 3 years ago.  The rear driver went out about 4 months ago and is wedged in place.  The front passenger went out about 2 weeks ago and is down.  The rear passenger went out this past weekend.  I bought mine new from Carmax and never serviced at the stealership, so won't waste time on the phone with Crysler.  Going the aluminum block repair route.

I have a 2002 Jeep Cherokee it all began in November when I shut the back passenger door and the window fell down $400 to fix.  My sister has the same exact Cherokee we bought at the same time.  The same window went down 2 months later.  Then her front passenger window fell down when the door was shut in April.  I was driving to work today (July) and the back driver side window fell down while I was driving.  I am currently on the phone with Chrysler to see if they will back their product which I am sure they won't since they didn't help my sister out.  I will never buy a Jeep or a Chrysler car again or deal with Whitten Brothers in Richmond, VA.  I am also going to call consumer affairs, the attorney general, and Channel 12 on your side.  I might even get my family together and go stand on Midlothian Turnpike with signs to discourage anybody from buying a vehichle from them or Chrysler.  This is a defect in these vehichle and someone should stand behind their product.  But I guess I will be looking forward to the other 2 windows falling down soon.  What a joke!

We have a 2006 Liberty and have had this same problem. Just wrote my letter to Chrystler this morning as well as Consumer Affairs. I can't wait for our lease to be up so we can hand this piece of crap back. First the rear driver side window just slid down one day about 6 months into the lease and never came back up again - we had never even lowered the window once since we got the car. Today, about 18 months into the lease, the driver's window did the same thing. I asked the service manager to inspect the other 2 windows so I don't have to come back 2 more times for the same damn problem and he said no - they have to break first. Now we are REALLY not going to buy out the car when the lease is up! Sure, make me wait until the warrantee is expired! I must look stupid. I asked him if the windows are just going to break over and over again and he said that Jeep has made the regulator much better so the news ones work fine - SO THEY KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM!!! His explaination was that when you lower a dirty window, the dirt gets trapped inside and makes the regulator go bad. That is crap, because we had never once lowered the first one that broke. And if every dirty window that was lowered in America made the window break, then nobody would have working windows!

My poor husband keeps getting lemons for cars - his last problem was a 2004 Ford Focus which would just refuse to start at random for no apparent reason. We fought the Ford dealers for 2 years over that car, they kept saying "We can't replicate the problem" ARGH! I HATE hearing that from a service department! I think his next car will be German like mine.

Yes this is a manufacturing defect.  Happened to both my front windows and to other owners I know as well.  When I discussed this with the dealer service rep he admitted it was a common problem to JGC's and it was due to a manufacturing defect.  In trying to cut costs they used a substandard part (plastic, I believe) instead of a metal one.  They break too easily and Jeep has swapped this component on a go-forward basis since 2005 or so.

Add me to the list too. 2001 GC Laredo. Heard the nasty snap and watched my drivers side window creep down. Thanks to this board I found what I hope will be the solution. I bought the metal cable anchor from http://pocketlogger.com/?pid=jpw . I probably could have rigged it with the help of home depot but I didn't want to revisit this defect later. Thank you guys, without this board I would have spent hundreds at the dealership and probably had the same defective part reinstalled into my GC.

Same happened to me, I bought an 02 Jeep liberty three months ago and today one just sagged a little and when I tried to roll it up started clicking and fell down further. The first owner had already replaced all of them a few months before I bought it but she didn't keep any receipts. I can push it up but it goes a quarter of the way back down. how easy would it be to buy the guts for just the one and fix it myself?   I am a college kid and don't want to pay someone 400 if I can do it.

to Charlescrose;

First off thank you so much, step by step was exactly what I was looking for and I really appreciate it. however, as I have only moderate experience I had a few questions, how exactly do you wedge the glass? And once fixed does it happen again like in other posts or are the parts you are getting different from the factory and therefore devoid of the defect? Thanks in advance, youre previous post already helped a ton!

I own a 2001 Grand cherokee ltd.  32000miles So far it has used two front differentials. 3 sets of brake discs plus pads. New window motors both sides.  new Lambda sets. I am now told it will need new front suspension joints. It has never been off road.Is this a record for service problems.????

My 2001 jeep 32000miles has had both windows go. Two front differentials,2 sets of brake discs, both Lambda sensors.Fuel pump airleak, and now I'm told it needs new front suspension joints. The model was assembled in Austria.  It has never been off road.  Is this to be expected from Chrysler!!!!

ok I know you guys are having problems with the window regulators, but look on the bright side, atleast you have not purchased a jeep liberty. I work at a dealership and have replaced all 4 window regulators on the same visit. They truly are junk. What you should do is find someone that can get the part cheaper and do it on the side so you dont have to pay $90 per hour at the dealership.

Hey guys... just thought I'd share my experience too.

We just bought a 2001 Jeep GC Limited- - 70k, Yesterday the passenger window dropped.  The forum here was a great help.  I almost bought the replacement kit, $108 here in MN, but I figured I'd look it over first hand and then decide.  Someone had mentioned using a Cotter Pin on the forum - that got my attention.  So I picked up a couple on the way home from work yesterday.  Long story short the cotter pin worked like a charm!!!

After I used the great guide that was posted here to remove the unit I could see that the small plastic Square holding the cables was still in tact - only a corner (one with the most pressure when the window is shut) was busted off.  Luckily my wife hadn't run the motor after it fell so the motor still worked and the cable wasn't mangled.  Looking closer at the block I saw there were a couple holes already in the plastic block so it seemed a pin would be pretty simple.  I used a 1 1/2 in 1/8 " thick cotter pin.  The cotters hole was already small enough - but I pinched it a little tighter so the stopper couldn't have a chance of spreading it open.  Then I put in plastic block and bent over the other side.  The longer cotter pin allowed me to bend in one of the pins on the back side into a slot in the metal plate (added strength).  I thought about soldering it or spot weld, but it really didn't seem like it needed it.   I then braced the round part of the pin on a block and hammered the back side a bit to get her as flat and tight as possible.

The tough part was getting the cable back around the pulleys, I would recommend first pulling the cable from both ends next to the motor with pliers (squeeze gently) to get any slack out created by the falling window (I found an extra 2 inches hidden in there)  then force it around the lower non moving pulley - its a tight fit, but I got it and the PIN stayed in place just fine.

The Pin cost me 34 cents and this whole think with door assembly, etc. took about 2 hrs. (I'm far from a handyman or mechanic).  Not sure how long it will last, but at lest I only had to spend less than a buck!!!

Wow thanks for all the help on the forum here - I wouldn't have tried this with out that info!!  Hopefully this will help someone who wants to experiemnt with even a cheaper way to solve this problem.

Power to the people & Chrysler/Jeep can go suck an egg.
