There is a plastic clip on one side of the rail that can be removed to allow enough slack to attach cables to the nylon piece. Make sure springs are seated into motor housing and place cable around the clip (cable slide) and stretch it (a little muscle is needed) into place.

how is everyone doing i am new here as i just got my 2001 GC limited. i have had it for 2 months and guess what happened? Thats right my regulator broke mine has stayed up since it broke. Since its just the half circle guide at the bottom and not the piece holding the whole window up. Anyway wondering if anyone knows of someone that makes that half circle guide piece. Its incredible they make you pay so much for a part that probably cost .50 cents to make.

Hi.. Just wondering if anyone knows if a forceful door slam can cause the cable of the window regulator to break?  I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo and I'm not sure if this happened to my window because of someone slamming my door hard, or because of this problem everyone is mentioning.  The mechanic wasn't sure, and it cost me $250+ for the new motor.  Thanks!

Jan 2008, front passenger window fell down.  Had the local window shop pull it back up but when told how much the regulator/motor cost (estimating the problem), I said just wire it in place.....don't have *** to fix.  Now, April 5, the left passenger window falls down.  Hear motor trying to run but window keeps slipping further down. Slammed the door too hard??  Friend willing to work on it tomorrow, but if regulator has gone out, will just wire the window up.
Unbelievable that Jeep/Chrysler refuses to acknowledge problem.
Thanks VERY MUCH for instructions on removing door panel, etc.

You too? In the process of searching online for the solution they found your posting (just pulled the door apart and shimmed the window shut in the meantime - I refuse to spend another $400!!!!). Shocks!!!

fixed my window got a regulator and motor on ebay for 30 dollars. by the way anyone else hear that toyota and gm are recalling carollas, matrix and pontiac vibes. the reason is the glass separates from the regulator and falls into the door, hmmn sound familiar and chrysler refuses to do something what a crock

Don't replace the regulator assembly. Thats a more expansive and temporary fix. The plastic part at fault will fail again. For 30 bucks per window + shipping to anywhere in the world you can get this alluminum clip to permantly fix this problem. They have great instructions or if you feel you can't do it yourself (not that difficult) they can arrange to do it for you. I did this on one window. Now I wish I had done all of them because it is even easier to do before it breaks. Go to this web address.  http://pocketlogger.com/?pid=jpw         Problem Solved, Alan

Using the above instructions, I just finished installing a regulator on my dismal excuse for an SUV (2003 Grand Cherokee). I've sunk so much money into repairs on the thing I figured, for once I'd earn the $200/hr. labor charge. Took me an hour—no surprises, no hiccups, no problem whatsoever. These instructions are brilliant, and I really appreciate the intelligence of the person who put them together. Thanks!

Just bought the Power Cable Block that was suggested above. Will let everyone know how well it works in a few days. And yes, I have the same problem as everyone else here. My 01' GC Laredo's right passenger window died last night and rolled itself down over the night. To my shock at the number of complaints I can't figure out why Jeep/Chrysler has yet to do anything to fix this obvious manufacturing error. I encourage everyone here to call or email Jeep/Chrysler and make a complaint and ask why nothing has been done to solve this issue.

Arkansas35:
Hi, Has anyone else had problems with the power windows on their jeep just break and the windows go down?  I have had my jeep for 3 years now and have replaced all 4 power windows in my jeep and it has started again with the 1st one i had to replace today.  That makes 3 windows in the last month.  Any one know of a recall or anything please help.  Thank you Jerry

Oh yes! I have just replaced two windows in 2 months. I shut the door and they fall. I have called chrysler corp and complained. Call chrysler and complain and maybe they will get enough complaints they will have to do a recall. 1-800-334-9200. This is totally ridiculous. I never even use the two windows that broke. It is just me in the car.  You always see jeeps going down the road with plastic on the windows. At 450.00 a pop who can afford it. My jeep is a 2002. What good does it do to pay it off and then turn around and keep replacing defective regulators. Please everyone call and complain.

I have the same problem on my 2002 GC.  I've pulled the door apart - and I've come up with two low cost solutions to fix it.  My first idea is to simply epoxy the cables back into the worn plastic block (which I actually did yesterday - call me a caveman).  After waking up this morning and starting to worry that it isn't going to hold (even though I’ve tried my best to yank the cables out and they haven’t come out), I came up with a 2nd idea.  Because I had to replace the cables anyway (they were mangled in the motor spool) why not simply drill two holes in the plastic block just big enough for the cable to slip through (drill front to back, not side to side as the cables were originally mounted) - then put a washer over the hole (on the “back side” – the side where the cables were not mounted originally), pull the cable through (so the short end is on the “back side”), and then crimp the cable on the “back side”?  This way the stress is on the other side of the plastic block, and spread out a little using a washer.  The same thing can probably be done on the metal body of the part itself if you don’t want to drill the plastic (too soft?)  It cost me $2.56 in materials to re-do the cables the first time (went to Lowes) - so I'll probably re-do it with the drilling idea (probably cost me $3.00 this time because I have to buy washers).  The clearances look OK…  We’ll see what happens.  $3.00 is the correct figure to fix this – it is in fact just a small plastic part that failed.

Update on my fix.  Simply going to Lowes, buying 6 ft of new cable (3/32" I think - I just matched the cable exactly in person) and some wire crimps worked.  Just drill 2 holes in the offending plastic block, measure out new cables (you'll need about 1/2 extra on each side due to the new mounting spot), and crimp the cable on the "back" side of the block.  Then "re-string" it.  Make sure to grease it up or it likes to jam if it is completely dry (if you have the cables too long it will jam too).  In the end - repair cost $4.  Of course, it took me 6-7 hours to do - so looking back it might have been worth it just to spend the install time and get the part for $90 online (depending on your financial situation).  In fact next time I’m going to just order the whole part online (found it for $83 plus shipping).  Probably a 2 hour job with a new part.  I’m sure my passenger side window will be next…

OK, same problem here.  I have a 2001 JGC Limited.  Its had its share of problems but fixing it has been cheaper than a new payment...  Had driver window malfunction a couple of years ago - $450 fix.  Back driver side window malfunctioned last week.  Dealer quoted $425 to fix.  You know what, its a back window and I rarely use it.  I do have a bad habit when I park to push up on all the windows to be sure they are shut from the driver door panel.  In any case I wasn't interested in spending $425 on a window I dont really use in addition to the vehicle is seven years old.  There are great comments on this board and good sites on the internet if you want/have to fix a power window.  For me, I cut a 1x4 board to length (about 20"), drilled a hole in the bracket under the window and screwed the board to the back of the bracket, the bottom of the board wedged at the bottom of the door frame.  I just finished but it seems to be in tight.  Will leave the door panel off for a few weeks to be sure but if it holds and it is water tight, I am done.  Good luck to everyone else on the site.

Add me to the club - passenger side front window stopped working on Saturday (20 minutes before it decided to storm after not raining in months - oh joy).  I had rolled the window up while driving - it then made an awful noise and proceeded to fall back down (all the way into the casing) while I was still on the road.  So, I figure it's the cable and am off to purchase the regulator piece.  I have been looking at the detailed instructions w/drawings on how to fix.  How difficult would this be for a female w/no experience in car repairs whatsoever?  I'm debating whether to pay someone $125 (not including part) to fix (cheaper than the $400 range quotes I got from 2 dealerships and one local "trustworthy" shop) or to try tackling this project myself.  If anyone could give me advice on whether I should try or not...I have a feeling most of you on here have some background on fixing things (what w/this being a car forum and all)so am wondering what the opinion is on someone who is clueless w/the exceptions of a printout of these directions making an attempt at this - certainly don't want to make it worse than it already is.  Oh yeah, mine is a 2000 Grand Jeep Cherokee. Thanks!
