Update: I went to the Chrysler/Jeep dealer who sold me this car 8 months ago to ask for some kind of consideration. The minute I said the words "window fell" to the Service Manager, he looked down and just shook his head. He said he would see what he could do, and later in the afternoon he phoned me to say that while they sympathize with my situation, and that he acknowledged that there are big problems with the Jeep window motors, there was nothing that they could do for me. (Gee, I feel SO much better for their concern!) As I had previously bought a brand new PT Cruiser from this same dealership, I was astonished that they would blow me off like that. I mean, HOW MUCH is it really costing them to fix this? The assembly (about $90, if it isn't marked up), and an hour and a half of their labor? And over this, they're willing to lose a repeat customer?????? No wonder Chrysler is going down the tubes!!!
Now folks, CHECK THIS OUT: the same day, I phoned Chrysler Customer Service HQ to plead mercy (very politely and respectfully, I might add). I spoke with a representative who informed me that because the vehicle was out of warranty, they would be "unable" to assist me. When I mentioned my research on the internet of how many vehicles are having this problem, he told me (GET THIS, AND I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP), that I "can't believe what one reads on the internet, that those people will write anything, and exaggerate"!!!!!! Well, he's talking about all of us. Are we a bunch of idiots, that we take the time to write into these forums to share, inform, and help others, but what we write is false? Who is he kidding?
People, COMPLAIN and keep complaining until they take responsibility. File the complaint at the NHTSA site (see earlier thread). I can't afford to keep fixing these windows, can you? Well, the Dealer is not getting the repair work. I spoke to my regular independent mechanic, and they will be getting this job. He even agreed to let me order the part myself rather than the markup through his supplier. He says he fixes AT LEAST 2 JEEP WINDOW MOTORS PER WEEK AT HIS SHOP!
Hey CHRYSLER/JEEP, PAY ATTENTION TO THIS:
I love my PT Cruiser (so far, but it's still under warranty); and other than this window problem, I LOVE my Grand Cherokee. BUT (!) because you blew me off (and everyone else here) and still refuse to take responsibility for a blatant design defect, and you're hurting OUR wallets rather than doing the Right Thing, I WILL NEVER BUY A CHRYSLER PRODUCT AGAIN!!!!! I AM DONE WITH YOU!!!! MY NEXT NEW VEHICLE WILL BE ANYTHING EXCEPT ONE OF YOUR PRODUCTS, AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW EXACTLY WHY!!!! So now, how's your Bottom Line looking? You'll be losing millions of dollars over a cheap, little piece of plastic! Penny-wise, pound-foolish...

A friend of mine has a daughter has this thing with Grand Cherokees. She keeps buying them,,although everyone of them has been a problem with one thing and another. I guess she thinks she looks good driving one OR it's some kind of status symbol in her age group. But Both he and I ,,after having worked on everyone of her Jeeps to keep the repair costs down,,hate them. As far as a recall on the windows you could caall around and ask but my experience is they recall nothing unless it would kill someone and cost them more.
This is just my experience talking.

I'm on my fourth window replacement for 01 Jeep GC (2nd go round for my driver side window). I get my window part from ebay. I found this forum while looking for any recall info- amazed to see there is still no recall for the window- the first time it broke, it rolled up on its own...dangerous if my daughter's arm would have gotten in the way. I have filed a complaint at the web site previously mentioned on this site: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/Consumer.cfm I'm ready to get rid of this once I can get everything fixed!

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 made in Europe. My passenger window stopped responding -- luckily in the UP position. I would like a best guess. Is it the REGULATOR ? the MOTOR ? or the Wiring in the passenger seat that continuously sticks up when seat reclined ? or a wiring disconnect resulting from the dealer free work when we had front SEATS THAT OVERHEATED a few years ago? I don't want to spend $ 400 -$ 500, but it is a real nuscence. I'd likely do the repair myself. Any advice ?

All of these articles on the JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE just reminded me of another car brand with the same problem. I'm wondering if this problem has come to us from Germany ? Daimler Chrysler is in Germany, too.
My 1998 5.9 JGC was manufactured in Germany; so was my son's 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. It was the first car he purchased himself, and was the "top rated" car that year !! Within 2 years, all the windows fell down, one at a time. VOLKSWAGEN fixed the driver window under warranty, but refused to fix the other windows when they fell. (He had purchased the extended warranty, bumper-to-bumper !) He got rid of the car and hasn't bought a VOLKSWAGEN since.
Perhaps we can benefit from knowing that both Manufacturers had the same problem -- with VOLKSWAGEN at least fixing one window. I wonder which parts they use in-common? Useful information for Chrysler warranty ?

Did not want to feel left out, so I will join the power window club with my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This last weekend the front passenger side window completely fell into the window. After removing the door panel, sound dampener, hardware, and actuator, the problem was immediately discovered. It turns out that the cable in the cable spool (located in the actuator) was kinked. With a pinched/kinked cable, the cable could not travel its full duration. Due to the pinch the plastic piece (attached to metal plate) holding the cable at the end broke off (resulting in window dropping). So, I am in process just to find a cable and the metal plate with plastic white clip. I can safely say that the actuator (otherwise known as regulator)works well (saying this with my fingers crossed). However I must say that being a Jeep lover, I find this 2003 GC Limited to be disappointing with the amount of repairs I has since July. -Ed

Thought I would put my 2 cents in here. I bought my daughter a 99 Grand cherokee, the drivers side door lock motor was shot.. I took to the dealer like alot of folks here and felt that spending a small fortune for the motor and installation was just a bit much... i found a site called www.jeeptweeter.com where i bought the door lock motor which came with online installation instructions. The part was cheap and the installation was more than managable.... also picked her up a tweeter for her dash as well.... another part that chrysler seem to have problems with.. unreal...
anyway.. just my 2 cents.

I tried to open my window when it was frozen and the same plastic cable guide (the one that looks like half a pulley) and the plastic clip on the other side broke off. My cables are OK but I'm not sure if I can just replace the plastic guides or if they are mounted to another assembly and if I have to get the whole assembly. I would appreciate a picture of what you made and if you have or know where I can find a diagram of how the cable system mounts, I would appreciate it.

I just replaced my second window regulator (over $400 each repair). Now I have a problem with my low beam headlights. They will not come on and after paying $100 to locate the problem, I'm told I need a new body control module. This will cost $503 plus another $300 to install making a total repair cost of over $900. This is a re-manufactured part. Has anyone else had this problem or suggestions for a cheaper way to repair it? Please send me any info on who to contact Detroit. Thanks!

Hey,
The passenger side window on my mom's 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee fell down a few months ago. From what I've read, the obvious problem is that freakin' regulator/motor part.
But I should be able to fix it for her pretty easily thanks to this site, you folks and Jeepin.com...

you can easily get the motor/regulator fixed yourself and all it will cost is the price of the part which you can buy off ebay for a mere 60$ compared to others paying 400 i just had to fix my 2001 grand cherokee drivers side to pass inspection and i just bought the part and installation took approximately 15 minutes just remember which way you take it out and it goes in super easy

We drive a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado. Two days ago my wife heard a pop and the front right glass fell inside the door. I got it home, removed door panel, inspected and found the cable assembly had lots of slack explaining why it would not move with the opener. The motor and switch circuit still worked, but with the cable not connected on one end, nothing moves. I removed the track and motor assembly to find, the "Lift Plate" contains a nylon/plastic piece that holds both ends of the steel cable in place and the nylon piece gave way and the cable end pulled out. I hate to spend a lot of money on an assembly, and I can affix the cable end to it's close proximatey, of where it was secured, or acquire another "lift plate" at the local wrecking yard, but my problem is I can not get the cable ends pulled around the end pulleys and secured into place. I can take the motor and quickly apply 12 volts and make the motor turn the cables in or out depending on polarity, but it acts like when one end got loose, maybe the motor pulled in to far and I can't get enough out to attach things back in order. Any ideas from anyone?

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee passenger window regulator also broke. It was the plastic part that holds the cable to move window up and down. Bad design, they could have just as easy form a metal tab to hold the cable. Took me about an hour to replace plus 130 bucks for a cheep .50 cent part that could have fixed it. Note: Be careful trying to open Window if frozen shut(Thats what broke mine).
