I posted this blog and revealed every trick I could remember in my 3 years plus in the car business.  It takes just under an hour to read all the posts.  I put some info on negotiating, leasing, used cars, and some other tidbits I noticed along the way.  Enjoy: excarsalesman.blogspot.com

I would appreciate any advice I can get.  Should I get a used Nissan Maxima SE with 54K miles on it for $13000 (cash), or to use the money as a downpayment to get a new car, i.e. a Honda fit, or a Chevrolet Cobalt, etc.?

sounds like a lot to me for a used nissan with 54k miles, if you have the 13k cash id use it fo the down payment and get A- the same car brand new or B - Get a different car

Thanks for your reply.

I am torn between which ways to go.  I like the Maxima, however, a brand new Maxima will cost about $27000 with $14000 car loan.  The monthly payment will be high for me.  That's why I am considering buying a used Maxima.  Or, I should use the $13000 as downpayment to buy a least expensive car (what would you recommend?) with less car loan?  The car I end up buying will be kept for many years.

Just checked that out, I had no idea that car was that much, what I would do If i had 14,000$ cash I would go buy a car that costs like $20,000 brand new, my thinking is spend the extra $6000 to get something brand new, which someone didnt run into the ground and never change the oil etc. Brand new you run into WAY less problems, still have a warranty, and it doesnt smell like the last guy ...

Car salesmen act the way they do because they only move a car every two or three days (average), most of them work 100% on comission and dont get squat if they dont move cars, and theres always a requirement of X cars per month, or they get the boot.

Theres also an incredible amount of politics within the dealership itself.

I did not mention the fact that sometimes the dealer is also trying to cheat the salesman out of the proper commission.  I cannot count the times that I would take in a car on trade myself for say 10k, end up being the salesman who sells it for 14k, the dealer having done nothing to it, and I am supposed to be paid 25% of profit after a $500 or so deduction, ie. almost a $1000 commission, and I get $400 or whatever and have to confront whomever will listen to get my proper pay.  They are a mess from every perspecitive.

Here's what really makes me mad. My husband is a car salesman and trust me I know there are some people that are just out to get your money but not all of them are. I get so sick of hearing people *** and moan about salesman, well if its so bad for you then ride a *** bike. Have you ever thought of the mark up in everything else? I mean come on do you seriously think it takes these manufactuers $80 to make one sweater? And does is seriously cost a farmer $4.00 to milk one gallon from his cow? I didn't think so. Its just like I said all people whine about anymore are car salesmen, lawyers, and gas prices, but maybe you need to sit down and consider everything else..... Hell you pay $1.00 for a freaking tomatoe.... Yeah you know it doesn't take that much to plant that baby. Everyone has to make money, so you can either GET OVER IT and deal with these things in life or you can *** forever and always be unhappy. Because I can promise you if you think this way, then everyone's always ripping you off. Have a WONDERFUL LIFE!

Everyone knows that everything is marked up.

So what is wrong with trying to save money and not get RIPPED?

Everyone has to make money, so we should just roll over and take double digit interest rates, prices THOUSANDS more than a smart buyer?

Everyone has to make money so you should just pay whatever anyone asks and not try to look out for your interests???

I don't call being happy being an idiot.

Problem solved -- Go on-line and get educated.  Visit Carsdirect.com.  Pick your car and you get a price.  Use that price and bring it into the dealership and see what happens.  No haggling.  They either beat the price or they don't.

Car dealerships forget that information on vehicles is everywhere.  No one has the corner on offering a competitive price.
